Facing 'ban Gita' case, Hindus build Krishna temple in Moscow
NEW DELHI: Hindus and Krishna devotees may be fighting a court battle in the Siberian city of Tomsk against a move to ban the Bhagavad Gita, but their 40-year quest to find a foothold in Russia is taking shape in the construction of a massive temple on Moscow's outskirts.

The Moscow Vedic Centre, as the temple devoted to Krishna will be called, is coming up on a five-acre land at Verskino village in Molzhaninovsky, close to the Sheremetyevo international airport, Bhakti Vijnana Goswami, a Russian Iskcon monk who is visiting India, told IANS here.

The Moscow Vedic Centre is a replacement for the original Krishna temple that acted as the centre of Iskcon or International Society for Krishna Consciousness that has today spread to 80 cities in Russia and has over 50,000 active devotees.

The original temple, Goswami said, was demolished in 2004 by the Moscow city government as it came in the way of a new apartment building.

To compensate for the demolished temple, the Moscow administration provided Iskcon an alternative plot of land on Leningradsky Avenue, where the temple functions temporarily till it moves into the Moscow Vedic Centre in late 2012.

"It is ironic that the Russian capital is recognising our humanitarian service, while in another city in the country, state prosecutors have filed a case to get Bhagavad Gita banned in Russia," Sadhu Priya Das, an Iskcon devotee in Moscow, told IANS over phone.

The history of Iskcon in Russia is a story of extraordinary events, all demonstrating the unique destiny Russia holds in the spiritual future of the world, according to Goswami, who is spearheading the temple construction.

The story began in 1971. As Leonid Brezhnev was consolidating his totalitarian rule in the erstwhile Soviet Union, Iskcon founder Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada visited Moscow for five days to meet Professor Kotovsky, a Soviet scholar of Hinduism.

"Though Prabhupada's conversation with the Russian scholar was meaningful, the actual miracle was his meeting with a single Russian youth, who was led to the spiritual leader's hotel door to hear the message of Bhagavad Gita.

"Today, 40 years after Prabhupada met with the young Russian, a mighty tree has taken root with close to 50,000 practising Vaishnavas in Russia," Goswami said. In former Soviet states that are part of the Commonwealth of Independent States, there are 55,000 more Iskcon members.

Today the Iskcon temple in Moscow attracts 1,000 devotees a day on an average and 10,000 devotees, a majority of them Russians, on Janmashtami, Lord Krishna's birthday.

Iskcon itself became a recognised official religious organisation in the Soviet Union in 1988 after then President Mikhail Gorbachov introduced Perestroika, a movement within the Communist Party there for political restructuring. "The days of per-secution under the atheist Soviet government was over in 1988," Goswami said.

Soon, in 1990, Moscow authorities provided Iskcon a semi-dilapidated building at Begovaya for a temple, which was later demolished in 2004 leading to the allotment of an alternative land for the Moscow Vedic Centre.

"The alternative land in lieu of the demolished temple came about in 2006, when Moscow's mayor and the Delhi chief minister had signed a joint declaration in this regard," said Goswami. A year later, the Moscow administration issued the necessary orders for the construction of the Moscow Vedic Centre.

In November this year, Indian President Pratibha Patil sent a message to the Iskcon when it observed 40 years of its work in Russia.

"Over the past few decades, Iskcon has played an important role in popularising the noble and eternal message of the Srimad Bhagavad Gita and promoting spiritual harmony in many foreign lands. It is a tribute to the resolute spirit of the followers of Iskcon that they have sustained their presence in Russia for so many decades," she said in her message.

The Tomsk city court is scheduled to deliver Dec 28 its verdict in the case filed by the state prosecutors for banning Bhagavad Gita and branding it as "extremist" literature, after a deposition from the Russian human rights ombudsman.

Around 120,000 middle class people gathered in Moscow on Saturday for a second large anti-government demonstration; they acted as a wave of new activist struggle against the Govt.

The middle class Russians are angry over parliamentary elections earlier in December wherein many rejected the same as fraudulent and slanted in favor of the ruling party, United Russia.

It is such a wave that can alter the course of presidential elections in March, when Vladimir V.Putin plans to extend his status as the country’s dominant figure to 18 years as per Ellen Barry.

The crowd began forming more than an hour before the beginning of the protest, for which city authorities granted a permit up to 50,000 people but the gathering exceeded 120,000.

It may be God's indirect signal to the leadership of that country who don’t hesitate to malign the dignity of “Bhagavad Gita”, which contained the commandments directly from God according to Hindu Belief.

So far the Holy Book of FAITH, Universal Modern Religion, which was released on 16 October 2011 for private circulation to the members of the GBA and also selected members who hold complete trust in Universal Modern Religion “FAITH” is concerned, it has already indirectly hinted in their texts from 1884-1886 in advance how the things could develop in Russia in wake of possible ban of "Bhagavad Gita",

The main purpose of that hint in advance by the FAITH Religion through its Holy Book was that the respect of God in all forms should be maintained whether related to Temples, Churches, Mosques or in the form of holy texts of any world religion.

According to the Founder of "FAITH" Swamy (Dr.) Raj Baldev, Cosmo Theorist, "Believing is one thing which is one’s own opinion but disrespecting is another, it amounts to a direct insult to God and an act of unfaithfulness, since each and every human is using God’s gifted soul, body, earth, nature and the Universe".

A court in Siberia wants to ban the Gita. Indians, Hindus especially, are upset, especially since the court sees the Russian translation of the ISKCON commentary as a document that spreads social discord and advocates war and extremism.

First we must understand, that the court is in Siberia, a land that for over half a century, banned religion in keeping with its Communist ideals. Now that Communism is dead, the Orthodox Catholic Church is making a comeback.

A little bit of history: when the barbarian tribes overran Rome around 5th century AD, the Emperor shifted base to Byzantium, where eventually Christianity became the official religion. The Byzantine Church took credit for it and distanced itself from the Church at Rome. When, in the 15th century, following the Crusades, the Muslims overran Byzantium, the Church there moved north to Moscow and was patronized by the Russian Czars who yielded great influence on Eastern Europe until the Communist Revolution in early 20th century. This Byzantine Church is also known as Eastern Orthodox or Orthodox Catholic Church. It has a long history of being close to political power.

An entire generation of Russians grew up without any exposure to religion. The floodgates opened after the collapse of Communism. The Roman Catholics are there, the Protestants are there, the Muslims are there, the Buddhists are there and the Hindus are there too, especially in the form of the very visible ISKCON.

By nature, Hinduism has not been a proselytising religion. The idea of 'converting' to Hinduism does not exist though the idea of 're-converting' back to Hinduism has been advocated by Right-wing groups. But ISKCON is a 'sampradaya', a sect with a guru, based on the Gaudiya Vaishnava parampara (traditions), and you can enter a sampradaya through diksha or initiation, which can be seen as 'conversion'. Naturally, it threatens the Russian establishment.

ISKCON presents Hinduism in a highly monotheistic form, with Krishna as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and Shiva, even Vishnu and Ram, as demi-gods! While this makes perfect sense within the sampradaya, it makes no sense to the average Hindu on Indian streets. The ISKCON translation with commentary of the Bhagavad Gita ("As it is") is rather unique, and quite different in flavor from the hundreds of other translations and commentaries such as those of Adi Shankar-acharya, Vallabh-acharya, Nimbarka, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Charles Wilson, Eknath Eshwaran, and Ramesh Menon, but it remains for most Hindus as valid as other translations and commentaries.

The Western mental template, be it Communist or Christian or secular, tends to be linear and literal, obsessed with exactness, quite unlike the Indian mental template that is cyclical and highly symbolic, comfortable with numerous even contradictory interpretations, one of the reasons why Indians are so comfortable with different religions, personal faiths notwithstanding.

So the Siberian court's view is very understandable, and without doubt political. How does one explain to them that this is the book that inspired Mahatma Gandhi, who spearheaded a non-violent freedom struggle? It is not easy. Seen literally, it can be easily seen as a manifesto for war where a warrior who does not want to fight his cousins is encouraged to raise his bow. But every Hindu in India knows that nothing in Hinduism is literal.

While we mock and condemn the Siberian court for its stand, let us not forget that the Western linear-literate template is used by American Indologists to describe Shiva-linga purely in sexual terms and some in the Roman Catholic Church to condemn yoga. Rather than provoking the increasingly common reaction of outrage, it must evoke empathy by making us realise how different people of the world see the same world differently.

According to some media reports, the public prosecutor of Tomsk, Russia, has filed a case in a local court seeking a ban on the Bhagvad Gita, As It Is, with commentaries by Swami Prabhupada. The prosecutor claims that the book is "extremist literature" and it may foster social discord and discrimination in the country.

This claim by the prosecutor is strange, to say the least. The fact is that the first Russian translation of the Gita was published in Russia way back in 1788. It means that the Gita in Russian has been available for more than 200 years. During this long period, there has been no report to suggest the book ever created any problem anywhere in Russian society. Moreover, the prosecutor has failed to refer to any new development that suggests the book could become a danger to Russia today.

Even cursory reading of the book by someone will show that the Gita is a book of wisdom. Mahatma Gandhi always used to say that the Gita was his intellectual mother, and that he had derived his ideology of peace from it. And Mahatma Gandhi not only made this claim, but also gave a demonstration of its truth by running Indian politics on the principles of peace and non-violence.

If some people disagree that the Gita is a book of peace, they have every right to. But in an age of freedom, every publisher also has the right to take out the Gita in any language.

Then there is the question of an internationally-accepted principle - that all religious books are holy books and no court has the right to issue an order to ban them. It is beyond the jurisdiction of any court. I hope that the Russian court is aware of this fact and will dismiss the petition.

The Gita is an ancient book which Indians have been reading for a very long time, and it has never promoted intolerance in the country, so it is impossible to say that it's a book of intolerance. In fact, those who have asked for the banning of the Gita are the ones who are intolerant.

Demanding that 'this' or 'that' book should be banned is not a healthy trend. Every book is a source of learning, and to promote learning and understanding, we should encourage the reading of the Gita rather than trying to banish it. Of course, it is naive to believe that a ban can bring to an end to the circulation of any book. We all don't have to agree on everything. But we don't have the option to eliminate differences. What we can do is try to manage the differences.

I am a practicing Muslim, and in my personal library there are three editions of the Gita - in Urdu, Hindi and English. These do not pose any threat to me.

NEW DELHI – Is Bhagavad Gita an extremist literature? When the whole world sees this as a book of life, which is even taught in the American corporate circles, a Russian Court is planning to ban the book in the country terming it an extremist literature.
As the issues flared up, the Indian Parliament witnessed a heated session as the parliamentarians across the party lines demanded the government to take immediate steps to resolve the issue. Protesting the Siberian court’s decision to ban Bhagwad Gita, Bharatiya Janata Party leader Sushma Swaraj demanded the government to declare Bhagavad Gita the “national book.” She said “no country would dare to insult it” if the book is given the national book status.
The case has been going on since June in the Russian city of Tomsk in which a group closely linked to the Christian Orthodox Church demands a ban on the Russian translation of Bhagavd Gita written by the founder of International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), A C Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.
However, there were reports that the Indian government ignored the alert about the Russian court’s move to ban the holy book. News wire IANS had reported that the ISKCON devotees in Russia have the copy of the warning letter sent to the prime minister’s office in November which was addressed to Principal Secretary Pulok Chatterji. “We are very sorry to inform you that on June 30, 2011, the state prosecutor’s office in Tomsk, Russia, has filed a court case asking the court to ban Bhagvad Gita in Russia, translated by ISKCON’s founder AC Bhaktived Swami Prabhupada,” the news report revealed the content of the letter. The letter had reportedly asked the government to send high level ministerial delegates to Russia to engage in diplomatic dialogues prior to Manmohan’s Singh’s visit to resolve the problem. However, they allege that the government did not heed to their alert and ignored their demands. The letter was signed by ISKCON’s governing body commissioner Gopal Krishna Goswami.
Art of Living Founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar responded to the development relating to Bhagvad Gita in the micro-blogging website Twitter and wrote, “Banning Bhagavad Gita in Russia is an unpardonable loss for the people of Russia. The move to ban ‘Bhagavad Gita’ shows intolerance; it is intolerance that is the reason for terrorism and not ‘Bhagavad Gita, Bhagavad Gita begins with word Dharma n ends with Mama. Entire Gita is nothing but Mama Dharma (My Dharma); that which uplifts life,” he tweets.
“Banning Gita ? Have they lost their minds. This great book of wisdom belongs not only to Hindus but to the whole humanity,” was the expression of lyricist Javed Akhtar on Twitter.
However, not many strongly feel the need of declaring Gita the national book as it has much of a universal character. Gita has been held with upmost respect by many great ones, including Albert Einstein.

Jammu, Dec 23 (PTI) The Jammu unit of Shri Ram Sena today appealed to Russian authorities to do away the move to ban Hindu scripture Bhagavad Gita in that country. "The Russian government should look into the Gita issue in their country for the betterment of Indo-Russia relations", SRS state president Rajiv Mahajan told reporters here. The filing of a case in a Russian court seeking ban on Bhagavad Gita has hurt the sentiments of millions of Hindus across the globe, he said. The right-wing organisation also asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to take the matter with the Russian government as the issue is related to sentiments of Indians and millions of Hindus.

В понедельник члены индийского парламента выступили против заседания суда в Томске, на котором рассматривается вопрос о запрете книги Бхагавад-гита, который, в случае вынесения приравняет книгу индусов к таким трудам как «Майн Кампф» Гитлера. По мнению следователей томской прокуратуры, перевод Бхагавад-гита нарушает права неверующих граждан.

Книга представлена как разговор индийского бога Кришны с воином Арджуной перед сражением. В книге много философских размышлений на тему основ индуизма. В свое время книга была высоко оценена ученым Альбертом Эйнштейном.

В Томске с 19 декабря начался судебный процесс о признании книги «Бхагават-Гита, как она есть» экстремистской. Эта книга является главным вероучительным документом для такой, организации, как Международное Общество сознания Кришны.

Понятное дело, разного рода противники 282-й статьи УК РФ, а так же радетели «свободы слова и вероисповедания», а так же любители Кришны стали активно возмущаться очередным «мракобесием» нашей «кровавой гэбни». Тем, как оная «гэбня» ущемляет, давит и репрессирует бедных бритоголовых ребят и девчат, закутанных в оранжевые простыни (сари и дхотти).
В сети появилось уже множество публикаций на тему хороших кришнаитов и плохого томского суда. Я уже успел поучаствовать в такого рода сетевой полемике. Отвечал в ней все больше кратко и ссылками, но, чувствую, необходимо дать подробный комментарий по всем спорным пунктам. Тем более, что и статья эта, 282-я, неоднозначна, много народа требует её отменить, да и сама организация МОСК последнее время не на слуху, и граждане наверное подзабыли, что это такое. И сам вопрос о «Бхагават-Гите, как она есть» требует отдельного рассмотрения. Судят-то не организацию, а только книгу. Пока.
Итак, давайте по пунктам.
1. Некоторые факты из истории и деятельности Международного Общества Сознания Кришны.
По данным справочника «Религии и секты в современной России» (http://www.ansobor.ru/articles.php?id=44) МОСК, как она есть, зародилась в США, в Нью-Йорке, в 1966-1967 годах. Согласитесь, уже не очень похоже на традиционный индуизм, хотя кришнаиты вам расскажут, что история их секты начинается века так с XV, и совсем не в США, а в Индии. Но здесь вы можете поинтересоваться, с какой скоростью индийские гуру переосвящают свои храмы после посещения этих храмов группами европейских, российских или американских кришнаитов. Узнаете, как говорится, много нового и интересного.
Нужно сказать, что по данным того же справочника, МОСК практически со дня своего основания действовала масштабно и… своеобразно, для миролюбивой религиозной общины. Вот только некоторые факты: «В 1984г. состоялось судебное разбирательство по иску семьи Джордж в отношении МОСК по обвинению некоторых адептов и руководителей кришнаитского движения в лишении Робин Джордж свободы воли, нанесении морального ущерба, клевете на ее мать и действиях, которые приблизили смерть ее отца, закончились вынесением приговора в пользу членов семьи Джордж, признанием их обвинений обоснованными». Или «…В 1986г. в городе Нью-Вриндаване (США) адепту местной общине кришнаитов было предъявлено обвинение в убийстве. Подозрение также пало и на руководителя этой общины Бхактипаду и на его ближайших сообщников, которым были предъявлены обвинения в совершении еще ряда преступлений. В ходе судебного разбирательства вина некоторых из них была доказана. В марте 1987г. Бхактипада был исключен из МОСКа, что мотивировалось, среди прочего, и тем, что он и его ближайшее окружение действовали вразрез с верованиями МОСКа. Но, несмотря на это, труды Бхактипады продолжают публиковаться и после его официального исключения из организации».
Ну, или, вот ещё случай: « …в конце 1996 года на 20 лет был осужден руководитель общины в Западной Виргинии, "гуру-преемник" Прабхупады за 2 заказных убийства».
А вот, что один из членов МОСК, хотя, точности ради, нужно сказать, что руководство МОСК сразу же высказалось в том свете, что этот человек в организации никогда не состоял, сделал с православным священником:
«…в ночь накануне весеннего равноденствия 21 марта 2000 г. поклонник индуистского бога Кришны убил русского православного священника в далеком сибирском поселке Тура. Священник - иеромонах Григорий - с 4 ноября 1997 г. был настоятелем молитвенного дома в п. Тура Эвенкийского района Красноярского края. По словам полковника Ивана Панова, главы УВД Эвенкийского района, убийца - Роман Гаврилов (1973 г. рождения), вооруженный самодельным шилом, в 3 часа ночи постучался в дверь отца Григория. Священник открыл дверь, и убийца нанес ему удар шилом в сердце и два в шею. Когда отец Григорий упал, Гаврилов отрезал ему голову складным ножом, сломав при этом нож. Далее изувер зашел вместе с головой убитого священника в помещение храма, обнес голову вокруг престола так, чтобы капающая кровь образовала на полу круг, и затем положил голову отца Григория на престол. Отец Григорий открыл дверь преступнику, поскольку был с ним знаком. Как рассказывают местные жители, ранее он помогал неприкаянному кришнаиту, снабдил его теплой одеждой , неоднократно кормил и много раз беседовал с ним, пытаясь убедить отказаться от заблуждений. Убийца был задержан на следующее утро. При задержании Гаврилов назвался Романом Хариевичем Кришницем. В содеянном злодеянии убийца не раскаялся. На первом же допросе он признался, что выполнял повеление своего бога: Кришна явился ему во сне и детально описал, что он должен сделать».
Кстати, если кого-то эти сведения заинтересовали, советую найти в сети книгу «Обезьяна на палке» или «Обезьяна на шесте». Там в подробностях изложены некоторые аспекты внутренней жизни общины МОСК.
Впрочем, понятное дело, что на все эти доводы кришнаиты отвечают в том духе, что «никто не застрахован от дурака». То есть, психопаты и прочие фундаменталисты случаются в любой религиозной организации, в любой конфессии. И вот тут давайте поговорим про вероучительный текст МОСК, то есть про «Бхагават-Гиту, как она есть». Поскольку сейчас томский суд пытается, в том числе, решить вопрос, мотивирует ли содержание этой книги адептов данного культа на такое вот поведение.
2. «Бхагават-Гита как она есть» и чему она учит своих последователей.

Таким образом, все дети, зачатые без указанного обряда, не обладают божественными качествами, а все люди, даже вступающие в законные с точки зрения государства и иных религиозных организаций, без цели служения Кришне – совершают предосудительные половые отношения, с точки зрения автора зачинают людей «как кошки и собаки» (БГ 16:3, с. 675).
А вот так вайшнавы должны оценивать окружающее их общество и кришнаитов, не входящих в МОСК: «Есть два типа людей: преданные и демоны. Господь избрал Aрджуну, чтобы поведать ему эту великую науку, потому что Aрджуна был Его преданным.Демонические люди не способны постичь сокровенный смысл "Бхагавад-гиты". Судебный процесс в Томске привлек пристальное внимание индийских политиков и общественности.

Как уже сообщали Regions.Ru, в августе 2011 года в Ленинском районном суде города Томска начались судебные разбирательства о признании книги «Бхагавад-гита как она есть» экстремистской. Судебный процесс был начат по заявлению прокурора города Томска. Речь идет о третьем издании с комментариями основателя международного общества "Сознание Кришны" Бхактиведанты Свами Прабхупады. Согласно заключению экспертов из Томского госуниверситета (ТГУ), на которое ссылается прокуратура, в вероучении, изложенном в этой книге, содержатся признаки разжигания религиозной ненависти, унижения достоинства человека по признакам пола, расы, национальности, языка, происхождения, отношения к религии. Кроме того, по версии прокуратуры, текст содержит "призывы к враждебным, насильственным действиям в отношении ряда социальных и конфессиональных групп".

Окончательное слушание дела в Томске перенесено на 28 декабря: Ленинский районный суд согласился запросить мнение уполномоченного по правам человека в РФ Владимира Лукина, а также известных индологов из Москвы и Санкт-Петербурга о предмете спора.

Дело быстро приобрело международный резонанс. Российские кришнаиты обратились к премьер-министру Индии Манмохану Сингху с просьбой не допустить запрета священного для них текста. За «Гиту» вступились депутаты индийского парламента. Глава МИД Индии Соманахалли Маллайи Кришна заявил, что посольство Индии в России внимательно следит за ходом судебного дела, регулярно контактируя с местными представителями Общества сознания Кришны. Как отметил министр, этот вопрос также обсуждался с послом России в Индии Александром Кадакиным.

Сам Кадакин подверг резкой критике сложившуюся ситуацию, когда, по его словам, "за толкование священного писания берется суд".

Руководство крупнейшей оппозиционной партии Индии Бхаратия джаната парти (Индийская Народная партия) обратилась к президенту России с настоятельной просьбой "вмешаться в судебный процесс над священной индуистской книгой "Бхагавад-гитой" в Томске".

Сообщается также, что в самой Индии резко подскочил спрос на издания «Гиты».

Директор Правозащитного центра Всемирного русского народного собора, религиовед Роман Силантьев считает критику России со стороны властей Индии необоснованной.
«По всей видимости, власти Индии были дезинформированы российскими кришнаитами», - предположил он. Заявления индийской стороны заставляют предположить, что ей сообщили о готовящемся запрете самой книги "Бхагавад-гита", а не комментариев на нее С.Прабхупады, "что далеко не одно и то же", - отметил Р.Силантьев.

"Например, есть Коран, а есть толкование на Коран какого-нибудь Саида Бурятского, и это совершенно разные книги. Он также упомянул, что недавно вернулся из Индии, где принимал участие в межрелигиозной конференции, и поднял вопрос о российских кришнаитах, "которые пытаются представлять в России индийскую цивилизацию".
"Представители традиционного индуизма выразили крайне негативное отношение к кришнаитам, незаконно присвоившим себе право именоваться членами высших каст. Они также заявили о готовности познакомить россиян с традиционным индуизмом, имидж которого сильно испорчен кришнаитами", - сообщил эксперт.
