Urgent Call to Prevent Environmental and Health Risks from Proposed Contaminated Soil Land Treatment Facility in the Alsek Valley

Comments

#1

There are other locations available for this project that are on clay bases, not against a national park, not in a high wind area, not right against and upstream from residential community, not in close proximity to two creeks that feed into a major river that leads to the ocean.

Alida Thomas (Haines Junction, 2024-11-13)

#2

The site needs to change.

Rebecca Schatz (Haines Jnc, 2024-11-13)

#3

I'm concerned about the environmental impact and impact on the individuals living in this area. This is an extremely sensitive ecosystem and contamination would be devastating

Jennifer Sugden (Haines Junction, 2024-11-13)

#4

This is an injustice on the sacred lands of the indigenous folks and others who reside there. The devastating impacts of this treatment facility will impact many people and possibly future generations on this and neighbouring lands. The likely devastation to natural habitats in the region is also heart breaking. Please do not let this project continue.

Aziza Ahmed (Saltspring island, 2024-11-13)

#6

I’m signing because this area needs to be protected!! And that specific location for a LTF would have horrible consequences on land, animals, waterways and humans living in that area! The choice of a different location is a priority before irreversible changes happen.

Julie Quilico (Whitehorse, 2024-11-13)

#8

We only have so many sacred land spaces left. Given the risks involved, this is a poor placement for this project.

Cassandra Curtis (Red deer, 2024-11-13)

#16

For many good reasons said so many time, against this project on this land

Lucie Llamas Bravo (Haines Junction, 2024-11-13)

#18

My family and I live downhill and downstream from the proposed site.

Linda Thompson (Haines Junction, 2024-11-13)

#19

I spend a lot of time at Bear Creek and believe this plan will be of serious detriment to the environment and wildlife as well as local redidents

Peter Knowles (Leigh on Sea, 2024-11-13)

#20

It's a no-brainer to not have contaminated soil in close proximity to dwellings and waterways.

Tina Schwendl (Haines Junction, 2024-11-13)

#21

As a potential tourist in the area, i m very concern and worried

Thibault Llamas Bravo (Nivelles, 2024-11-13)

#23

I live right next to the propose facility and will be adversely affected .

#28

The site is inappropriate and no other sites have been considered. Please reject the Macintosh LTF proposal.

Kathleen Cleary (Haines Junction, 2024-11-13)

#39

I live in the alsek valley and my health, and the health of the land I love on and water I drink would be affected.

Christa Egli (Haines Junction, 2024-11-14)

#41

I live in close proximity to the proposed ltf site and for the many reasons cited, this is not an appropriate location for an ltf.

Jolene Billwiller (Haines Junction, 2024-11-14)

#42

I agree the Alsek Valley is not an appropriate location for an LTF and wish officials will pick another location

Salome Alby (Haines Junction, 2024-11-14)

#46

LTF's shouldn't pose a risk to national parks

JACK URBANIAK (Nanaimo, 2024-11-15)

#53

This facility should not be in this location because of strong winds and no clay base to prevent potential seepage. The ground is just gravel!

Brigitte Geske (Haines Junction, 2024-11-16)

#54

I am a property owner in Nygren Subdivision and believe the statements in this petition are true and that the treatment facility should not be placed in a windy location, with porous soil and near to a residential area.

Ann Myren (Haines Junction, 2024-11-16)

#55

It is the wrong place for a LFT due to all the reasons listed.

Tim McDonough (Haines Junction, 2024-11-17)

#59

The Alsek Valley and land close by need to stay un contaminated for the safety of the residents and the quality of the land

Barbara Pelletier (Whitehorse, 2024-11-17)

#62

I believe there can be found a far more suitable location for this project to take place.

Earl Thompson (Haines junction, 2024-11-17)

#66

I'm signing because while I agree that an LTF is needed for this area, this location is one of the least suitable in the area.
They should be using industry standards not Yukon Government regulations which do not meet industry standards from what I have seen in my 40 years of working around LTF's across all of Northern Canada.

Vlad Makar (Haines Junction, 2024-11-17)

#67

I'm signing because as someone who grew up in the Nygren Subdivision, I would hate to see toxic chemicals being deposited so close to my parents' homes. It could be devastating for the children and families currently living there.

Lindsay Gaugler (San Diego, 2024-11-17)

#68

Another location for this LTF needs to be found and can be found. There are many locations around Haines Junction that are on a clay base, not in a high wind corridor, away from family homes, and more distant from creeks.

Sylvie Gewehr (Haines Junction, 2024-11-17)

#70

I think community consultation and consideration is important to projects like these and I understand there wasn't much if any. Did they consider using one of the old gravl pits along the highway for their contaminated soil dumping?

Rick Tone (Whitehorse, 2024-11-17)

#79

This is not a good location for a LTF ! Too close to a World Heritage Site, National Park, and Canadian Heritage River (3 reasons why the area needs protection). Too close to peoples homes. There are better locations in the local area for a LTF. If it’s worth doing it’s worth doing it right!

Rick Staley (Haines Junction, 2024-11-18)

#80

This sort of operation should be confined to existing industrial areas like the Faro minesite. It has no place in a natural environment.

MJ Peltier (Whitehorse, 2024-11-18)

#81

All stakeholders need to be consulted & studies have already shown unacceptable risk factors.

Denize Brewster-Mellett (Whitehorse, 2024-11-18)

#82

I live in the Alsek Valley and am extremely concerned about the possibility of this facility. No environmental work has been done to access the risks to the people, wildlife and fish of the area.

Joanne Thomas (Haines Junction, 2024-11-18)

#83

I live in the Alsek Valley and do not want my property values to fall or be contaminated.

Carl Thomas (Haines Junction, 2024-11-18)

#89

I worked for Kluane National Park and Reserve as a visitor attendant/interpreter for 12 season and am very familiar with the area as I have hiked and studied the flora. It is a very special and spectacular place and having read the impacts this development could have on this environment is unacceptable especially without proper consultation from the residents and the local First Nation.

Johanne Maisonneuve (Whitehorse, 2024-11-18)

#93

Important to protect this area.

Charlotte Hrenchuk (Whitehorse, 2024-11-18)

#102

This area includes the draba plant, which is a rare plant, to begin with. The area is just starting to show that some deer are returning, and is an open grazing area for lichen. It provides a safe natural habitat or eco-system for bears and other animals that use it like a corridor. It gives all of us access to the natural trails in the area for walking with our family animals. Can it be re-located to an underused gravel pit area further up the highway that is not close to a body of water, river or creek?

Alessandra Barone (Haines Junction, 2024-11-18)

#107

I love the alsek valley and don’t want it destroyed

Kim Henkel (Haines Junction, 2024-11-18)

#110

I love the Alsek, let’s keep it clean

Isabelle Piché (Whitehorse, 2024-11-18)

#112

Yukon standards in this area are not very high, it would be interesting to evaluate the area based on the rules in British Columbia. The risk is far too great to rush headlong for short-term financial gain. The environmental, health and tourist impact is undeniable.

Ariane Therasse (On, 2024-11-18)

#118

I m signing because I have visited kluane national park, this exceptional site and I m extremely compelled to support this effort of preservation. I want with all my heart that this unique place remains a space of respect of nature where we can meet and share the beauty and peace it brings to the community that cares back for it

Marie-Pierre Cossette (Montreal, 2024-11-18)

#119

I am Kluane First Nations I care deeply about the health of the park the UNESCO and the land. Protect land, protect water ways.

Amber Berard (Whitehorse, 2024-11-18)

#120

Not against dump sites. A better location for this can be found.

Alex Lansfield (Haines Junction, 2024-11-18)

#124

I'm concerned about the suitability of the chosen location for the facility. A location with low permeability soil further from residential aquifers would be more suitable for the facility.

Brett Godwin (Whitehorse, 2024-11-19)

#130

Recently moved after residing in Haines Junction for 18 years. This is a very special valley. Devastating to hear of this proposal.

Julie Klippenstein (Black Creek, 2024-11-19)

Care for the environment and want to help support.

Jenandi Pretorius (Johannesburg, 2024-11-19)

Let's find a safer place to treat contaminated soil.We need a facility like that but we should be extremely careful with the location

Doriane Vizcaino (Burwash Landing, 2024-11-19)

#160

I love our earth

Michelle Swanson (Abbotsford, 2024-11-19)

#161

You can’t keep ruining pristine land, and it will have a much wider impact than you think.

Caroline Dent (London, 2024-11-19)

#168

I have paddled these rivers all my life and want to protect them!!

Ayla McDonald (Whitehorse, 2024-11-19)

#178

As a Canadian I care about Canada’s environment and have a right to speak up against anything that will harm it.

Caroline Murphy (Tors Cove, 2024-11-19)

#179

Having spent many years at my home on Nygren Subdivision I don’t want to see the environment damaged by this misplaced scheme.

Marlene Knowles (Leigh on Sea, 2024-11-19)

#182

I own property and live in the Nygren subdivision, immediately adjacent to the proposed project. There are much more suitable locations for this type of development in the region!

Michael Salvisberg (Haines Junction, 2024-11-19)

#185

I care about the nature that God gave us.

Peter Lauren (Peoria, 2024-11-19)

#199
