Club 888 Does Not Belong on Driftwood Road

Comments

#2

My sr citizen parents live on driftwood road and I’m concerned for their safety.

Kalli Anderson (Toronto, 2021-09-04)

#5

No thought has been given to the existing residents, safety issues, run off into the lake and on I could go. This is absolutely ridiculous and supports the developer. Insane!!!!

Mary Morrison (Orillia, 2021-09-04)

#6

I agree completely with Melissa’s concerns. This development should not go forward.

Susan Wood (Orillia, 2021-09-04)

#10

A 10 story apartment/condo building DOES NOT belong on Driftwood Road!! It would be a complete eyesore and definitely not blend with the neighborhood and probably decrease the value of homes there because who the hell is going to want too buy any of those houses that have been there for years and have beautiful architecture if there's an ugly 10 story building in the way! Not to mention the increased traffic and the safety of children and pets!! SHAME ON YOU FOR EVEN CONSIDERING THIS TO BE AN APPROPRIATE PLACE!!

Debbie Tinsley (Ancaster, 2021-09-05)

#12

The proposed property development is ludicrously inappropriate for the site and the neighbourhood.

Don Evans (St Catharines, 2021-09-05)

#16

This building will upset and destroy the very sensitive ego system especially the wildlife. We will loose our swans, blue herons, ducks, otters etc.

Barb Adam (Orillia, 2021-09-05)

#19

Too much development in a small congested area. I agree with all points expressed by Melissa McKee.

Wendy Fleming (Orillia, 2021-09-05)

#24

There are already 88 units on one city block that have been approved. That's more than 88 new vehicles on a one block no sidewalk road with no way to access Hwy 12. There doesn't seem to be a 'plan' at all.
What other residential street in Orillia is having 88 new condo units built after just having 88 units built in the last 5 years??
AND NOW they want to add another 44 units.
This is planning?
This may seem like an Orchard Point problem, but with the skyrocketing house prices, they are coming for your street and your open spaces next.

Lance Anderson (Orillia, 2021-09-06)

#26

This neighbourhood has reached capacity. I didn’t move here 37 years ago to live in a big city life style. You want big city ? It’s just south a few km. There are no amenities for this type of density. The only exit is by car and that is high risk. Enough!

Bill Marsh (Orillia, 2021-09-06)

#27

I'm signing because I agree and live nearby. I think our little bay will suffer from too much development. The environment will suffer too. Traffic has been building. Speed has not been kept to 60 kph.

Judith Sophie (Orillia, 2021-09-07)

#28

I have serious concerns about the environmental impact of this project!

Doug West (Orillia, 2021-09-07)

#29

I have strong concerns about:
The increased traffic on Driftwood and Atherley,
The environmental impact on Lake Simcoe and Invermara Bay,
The foxes, the herons, and other wildlife that will be kicked out of their habitats,
The amount of land for this development is too small to accommodate this huge condo,
No guarantees from the city what action will be taken to install traffic lights or deal with cars trying to get out to Atherley Rd

Robin West (Orillia, 2021-09-07)

#30

I totally agree with the inappropriateness of this building on such a small site.

Josephine Schuetz (Orillia, 2021-09-07)

#31

this development does not belong here, on Driftwwod.

Judy Archer (Orillia, 2021-09-07)

#32

too much development for such a small area.

Mary-Anne Shaw (Mississauga, 2021-09-08)

#34

That ugly building definitely does NOT belong in that residential area...to even compare it to Sophie's Landing etc. ,is ridiculous ! Hopefully the city will have second thoughts and get pushing affordable housing instead of more homes for the well-off !

Nancy Lusk (Orillia, Ont., L3V1J7, 2021-09-10)

#37

This proposed development does nothing to protect the shores of Lake Simcoe.

Kathleen Timko (Orillia, 2021-09-10)

#38

This development is not suitable for this area. The city talks about sustainability this would destroy the nature and sustain pavement.

Christine Woodman (Ramara, 2021-09-10)

#40

I agree that this denigrated the neighbourhood and wildlife. There will certainly be a problem with traffic. Too dense for this small area.

Vonne Brister (Orillia, 2021-09-10)

#42

Too much congestion in this area !

David Barnes (Orillia, Ontario, 2021-09-10)

#43

I live at 603 Atherley Road right beside the proposed bldg. Will cast shade over our bldg. Will also create excessive noise and dirt during construction. Will drive away the wildlife like the blue heron who is there in the water directly in front of this proposed bldg. More congestion on the road - more road noise.

Ann Fancy (Orillia, 2021-09-10)

#46

I have lived in this area for 33 years and the amount of proposed properties besides Sophies Landing 1,2 and already has a proposed 3 and 4 and Marina Condos on the narrows entering off off Orchard park Road is already going to seriously over populate the Bay area in here. It will definitely effect Our visiting Osprey ,Herons ,Swans and other Waterfowl not to mention serious pollution effecting the fish population. This would be a Great mistake to let this proposal happen

Robert Garner (Orillia, 2021-09-10)

#48

Orchard Point is already overcrowded!

Sue Kerteston (Ramara, 2021-09-10)

#50

I’m signing because the traffic on the road just before the bridge is already dangerous enough without adding more pressure there. Also, EIGHT storeys is TOO high.

Rita Hinton (Orill, 2021-09-10)

#52

The city should only issue MINOR variances, not a total disregard to existing zoning.

Dennis Woodman (Orillia, 2021-09-10)

#54

We recently purchased phase 3 of Sophies Landing and are looking forward to retiring in a quiet low density community which is what we purchased. In addition to the above petition impacts it seems this is too large a development for this parcel of land. The shoreline will be disturbed not to mention the increased traffic on such a small street. This is not what Orillia is about!

Lisa Forte (Orillia, 2021-09-10)

#55

I believe this development will have a negative impact on this long term neighbourhood enclave.
Move it to the corner of Highway 12 and Atherley Road, the former building supply site.

Rick Swinton (Orillia, 2021-09-11)

#56

I agree with all the above mentioned points within this petition. This development would be detrimental to that area creating unreal congestion.

Francy Forte (Orillia, 2021-09-11)

#63

This area is congested already.

Isabelle Priess (orillia, 2021-09-11)

#64

Development of this size does not belong in this area.

Meghan MacDonald (Orillia, 2021-09-11)

#65

Over development in this small area! We have issues with getting out onto the highway already! No sidewalks..with the increase in car traffic already with the two condos and the new proposals of two other developments!! Enough!

Diana Young (Orillia, 2021-09-11)

#67

I love Orillia and agree with the residents in the area that an 8 storey condo is I'll suited for that location. It will harm the current environment that it would be built on and it would not fit in with the current streetscape.

Catherine ten Hertog (Victoria Harbour, 2021-09-11)

#69

I live at orchard point. It’s impossible to turn left onto Atherley/hwy 12 on weekends and at peak points in the day. Ministry of transport has (in the past) eluded to insufficient fatalities at the intersection. How many people have to die ? How many accidents have to happen to get lights there? Mariners pier and Sophie’s landing will already overload a very busy area!!!

FYI orchard point is 89 units at #90 and 49 units at #80.

Norma Chrobak (Orillia, 2021-09-11)

#70

I support my neighbours in their fight against this building. That area doesn't need more Waterfront buildings. We need to preserve our Waterfront.

Nadine Ritchie (Orillia, 2021-09-11)

#73

I live in Bayshore Village, Brechin and when I travel into Orillia I drive by the intersection of Orchard Point Rd and Hwy. 12. It is very dangerous - cars pull out dangerously and there is going to be a serious accident. Also this area should be homes and nature should be preserved. There is enough development here already.

Adele Proulx (BRECHIN, 2021-09-11)

#75

Hyw. 12 and Atherley Rd. are far too busy now and any additional high density construction will make it necessary to widen Atherley Road. That will affect the bridge at the Narrows and the fish wiers. Any construction projects that could affect our environment and eco system should be well thought out before proceeding.

Joy Skinner (Orillia, 2021-09-11)

#79

This would ruin this community and diminish property value here

Tabitha Davison (Barrie, 2021-09-11)

#81

This neighbourhood should be left as is with single family cottages or homes. No need to use properties like this to jam a bunch of rich people together. Go Melissa .

Murray Smith (Orillia, 2021-09-12)

#82

I am very much against the development proposed for this location as there is no regard for the negative impact to this area - to the environment, to the existing tax payers, etc. As well, the proposed density creates a significant safety issue in this area.

Kate Smith (Orillia, 2021-09-12)

#84

This is not the location for a development of the size.

Kristen Ellison (Toronto, 2021-09-12)

#87

I am a lifelong resident of Orchard Point and this is not a good fit for our neighbourhood.

Karen McKee (Orillia, 2021-09-12)

#88

An 8-story building on Driftwood Road is a joke. There are only 4 one-story houses on the street, it's not a good fit for the neighbourhood. The marsh is a spawning area on that bay that is only one feet deep.

Jimi McKee (Orillia, 2021-09-12)

#89

When will Orillia council get it? As I was born and raised in Orillia and still enjoy boating in the area it concerns me to see the natural beauty of these lakes scarred by oversized expensive corporate properties! It’s ironic especially when Orillia has pushed visitors away during this pandemic stating that they wanted to protect the parks and beaches from “outsiders” but when developers want to attract people to the area Orillia council welcomes them? Just look at the proposed development of the former rail lands along Centennial, Orchard Point and other condo buildings already built. Wake up Orillia before it is too late!!

Randy Contois (Markham, 2021-09-13)

#90

Disagree with this development for environmental and density issues. Also concerned it could set a precedent for other future waterfront developments where current zoning could be changed to accommodate the best interest of developers. I know Orillia has a new housing quota to achieve but this is not the way to do it. The quota is really intended for the “average” household buyer looking for affordable, mid range pricing and not for luxury condo buyers. We also need to prevent intense development on our waterfronts to protect the health of lakes Simcoe and Couchiching.

Susan Crowe (Orillia, 2021-09-13)

#92

I'm concerned about the health of the lake and the shoreline and the over development of such a small area.

Lee Kelly (Orillia, 2021-09-14)

#93

There are existing multi unit buildings already and numerous others proposed. This is far too dense for this small area.

Rob Henderson (Orillia, 2021-09-14)

#94

Susan. Mo naghan (Gravenhurst, 2021-09-15)

#95

I agree with intensification and 15 minute neighbourhoods but this is not an appropriate neighbourhood for the numbers already developed and certainly not the addition of more units. And that is without even looking at the environmental impact .

Valerie Powell (Orillia, 2021-09-15)

#96

I have lived at 585 Atherley Rd for 32 years. Invermara Bay is an idyllic soulful spot with unspoiled views, scenic shorelines, charming sunrises. Invermara Baylife has been untroubled and we want to keep it eco-friendly. Therefore proposal to develop Club 888 will change all of this if it's approved.

Anna Garner (Orillia, 2021-09-15)

#97

Orchard Point area is over-populated.

karen cornell (orillia, 2021-09-16)

#98

I have lived at 585 Atherley Rd. unit 204 for 32 years. It's an idyllic soulful spot. Unspoiled views, attractive shoreline, serenely beautiful sunrises. Invermara Bay Life has charm, it's a way of life. I'ts just common sense keeping it eco-friendly.

Anna Garner (Orillia, 2021-09-17)

#99

I feel the Club 888 is out of sync with the existing neighbourhood.

Cheryl McLean (Orillia, 2021-09-19)

#103

I believe the proposed residential apt building contains too many units for this small parcel of land on Lake Simcoe. It’s excessive and panders to business rather than to the immediate residents of Orchard Point and surrounding community. There are multiple examples of intensification already in close proximity. This would be too much.

Joan Morgan (Orillia, 2021-09-21)

#104

I am concerned with the overloaded natural waterfront at this property as it currently is a nesting site for Great Blue Herons and we witnessed the mating of a pair of Swans on that property earlier this Spring. Also, the Osprey regularly rest in those trees when they are fishing in the bay. If the building becomes higher than the surrounding trees this will likely deter these birds from landing on the trees of their natural habitat. If the waterfront becomes a destination for the residents this will impact on these creatures’ homes.

Jane Lewis (Orillia, 2021-09-22)

#105

I am deeply concerned about the density projections for this development as well as the increase in traffic in the area. Also of great concern is the impact on the waterfront in Invermara Bay. If the developer can have his subcontractor remove trees from the bay without prior consultation then I would despair of what might happen were this development allowed to proceed.
Furthermore, the zoning regulations were put in place for a reason, the city should not allow the application for change to the building height permission.

Henry Van Stralen (Orillia, 2021-09-22)

#107

I'm signing because of the critical safety issue. There are approx 750 people with only one access off the point on to a provincial highway with no stoplight, no sidewalks - a literal death trap.

Gary Spence (Orillia, 2021-09-30)

#108

I live on Orchard Point and agree that there should be no more developments permitted. There is only one way in or out of the Point and with more density proposed, traffic will be a nightmare.

Ruth Schueller (Orillia, 2021-09-30)

#109

I agree the congestion at the end of Orchard Point Rd is already absurdly difficult to turn left onto the Atherley Rd...when they had a zoom last week with Q & A , they allotted 20 minutes for this public imput...all those who managed to get in on the 20 minutes all opposed due to the congestion and lack of lights....when the people building this project ended their 20 minutes, there were 75 people in line to add to this that never got heard...It was a joke really !!!

Ron Watt (Orillia, 2021-09-30)

#110

The traffic build up at end of Orchard Point Road when trying to turn left. It is already difficult without the addition of more vehicles.

Janet Watt (Orillia, 2021-09-30)

#112

Traffic concerns among many. No traffic light at Orchard Point and Atherley. Population density potential given pending development also a major concern...

Pat Wylie (Orillia, 2021-09-30)

#113

Perhaps the developers should reside in the Orchard Point area to accurately assess the dangers a new development could cause to the residents of this small community.

Irma Dillinger (Orillia, 2021-09-30)

#115

Extreme congestion is on the horizon without adding more fuel to this fire....

Bob Kemp (Orillia, 2021-10-01)

#116

I agree with this petition.

Beverley Henderson (Orillia, Ontario, 2021-10-01)

#117

I agree 100%. There are a lot of seniors in the existing developments and as it we are struggling to turn out onto Atherley from Orchard Point Rd. The additional traffic of an 8 story apartment building will make it a nightmare and a frightening and time-consuming challenge. The architecture does not suit the rest of the developments either- it's quite un-attractive. If I had known the city was going to approve all of this over-crowding housing on this tiny peninsula I would have never chosen Orillia or Orchard Point as my final home when I retired.

Donna Coleman (Orillia, 2021-10-01)

#121

I oppose the building developments planned for 625,623 Atherley and 642 Driftwood Ave

Elaine Kervin (Orillia, 2021-10-01)

#122

I'm signing because the proposed development of an 8-storey residential apartment building containing 44 units is not a good fit for Driftwood Road on Orchard Point, given the number of homes and condo units already in this area and planned for this small parcel of land without the proper infrastructure to support more dwellings.

Arlene & Graham Eddy (Orillia, 2021-10-01)

#124

I strongly agree that the surrounding area is way too congested now

Urie Zawadowski (orillia, 2021-10-01)

#125

I strongly agree that there is tooo much congestion for the area

sandra sanderson (orillia, 2021-10-01)

#126

too much congestion

urie zawadowski (orillia, 2021-10-01)

#127

This is far too much development (high density) on such a small parcel of land.

Scott Spearn (Orillia, 2021-10-01)

#128

Far too much traffic now for a dead end street. Very dangerous for elderly people who like to walk .
Desperately need a traffic light at the intersection with Atherly road

Pauline Rothlisberger (Orillia, 2021-10-01)

#129

I'm not in favour of more development until they put lights at Orchard Point Road and Atherley Road, which they will not do because of the close proximity of the bridge!

Merike Barron (Orillia, 2021-10-01)

#133

Should have only access from Atherly not Driftwood.
Need lights at Orchard Point Rd before any new residential capacity added incl Sophie’s and Mariners

William MacKenzie (Orillia, 2021-10-01)

#134

With only one way out of this complex that makes it difficult to get out on to HWY12 now it would next to impossible to get out of here if all of these sites get developed.

Lee Whitman (Orillia, 2021-10-01)

#135

We do not have enough road access for all this increased traffic. We either require traffic lights or another road entry point

Mike Gervais (Orillia, 2021-10-01)

#136

At the intersection off Atherley and Orchard Point Road there are still no traffic lights. It is incredibly dangerous now and can’t imagine what it’s going to be like with all the construction vehicles coming and going.

Patty Purssell (Orillia, 2021-10-01)

#137

Because this will add to the problematic traffic situation which already exists between Orchard Point Road & Atherley Road.
There is more land to be developed which will make the situation worth!

Walter Rothlisberger (Orillia, 2021-10-01)

#140

This development will make access & egress to Hwy 12 more unsafe and the area infrastructure is inadequate.

John Triano (Orillia, 2021-10-01)

#142

No access to hwy 12

DOUG THOMPSON (ORILLIA, 2021-10-01)

#145

No infrastructure in place to support this development.

Sue Crawford (Orillia,Ontario, 2021-10-01)

#146

I want another traffic light with another access road to Atherley Road before I would agree to it. There is already too much traffic at Atherley Road and Orchard Point Road creating a very dangerous intersection even before they build Sophie's Landing.

CHUCK TEMPEST (ORILLIA, 2021-10-01)

#148

We need traffic lights at Orchard Point Road

Darlene Schryer (Orillia, 2021-10-02)

#149

The area will be too crowded

Sonia Attia (Orillia, 2021-10-02)

#150

This development contravenes the City's own Strategic Plan on having a Healthy Environment and Sustainable Growth. Orchard point is bursting at the seams and cannot afford another new development.

Lee Hanson (Orillia, 2021-10-02)

#151

It is absolutely true that this parcel of land will become so overloaded with condominiums it will drive value down and increase the already nightmare of traffic issues...

Richard Dupuis (Orillia, 2021-10-02)

#156

The problem is there should be a light corner of Atherleyand orchard point road. Itabig problem and someone will be hurt if there is an accident

Paulette Brown (Orillia, 2021-10-02)

#157

There is a big problem with crossing at corner of Atherley and orchard point is a big problem crossing left. We need a traffic light.

Robert Brown (Orillia, 2021-10-02)

#167

I am concerned about the density… we have no infrastructure.. no traffic light, no sidewalks, we don’t need the extra congestion these developments will bring

Charity Wyer (Orillia, 2021-10-05)

#168

The proposed development is much too large and too dense for the small area of land it would be sitting on. I agree with everything in the original text of the petition.

Anne Czemerynski (Orillia, 2021-10-05)

#177

I am concerned that the city and the Ministry of Transportation have not provided the residents who live in the Orchard Point neighbourhood safe and easy access. A traffic light is needed at Orchard Point Road and Hwy12 (Atherley Rd). This new development should NOT be allowed without this infrastructure in place. Sidewalks should also be provided. We pay some of the highest property taxes in Orillia, and our concerns are legitimate and must be addressed.

Allan May (Orillia, 2021-10-08)

#180

One only has to take a walk through the property to see the amount of wildlife habitats that call this land home. Endangered species such as cranes and numerous birds flock to this area at various times of the year. It would be a disgrace to destroy this habitat.

Robert Hollinger (Orillia, 2021-10-09)

#181

There is already significant construction being planned. Access to Atherley is already difficult at times. The design of the building is totally inappropriate for the site.

Gordon & Jean Ross (Orillia, 2021-10-12)

#182

it will be overcrowded and dangerous for the location

tracey rynard (Orillia, 2021-10-12)

#185

I am signing this document because this development is too large for this area.
with considerations of
--environmental impact
--traffic congestion
--pedestrian safety
--infrastructure overload

Ann Parker (Orillia, 2021-10-16)

#194

Lack of proper and safe traffic infrastructure to support the proposed development. Re zoning is for more than twice the height than was originally allowed.

Henry Mohlmann (Orillia, 2021-12-15)

#195

I’m signing because I live on Driftwood Road and agree to all the above. We recently purchased this home in August of 2020 because of the location and the atmosphere. This is a quiet, safe, dead end street with only a couple homes on it and very little if any traffic on it. By building a condo it would dramatically change our way of living, the environment and day-to-day life on Orchard Point. We are strongly against a building of this size in our backyard.

Megan Carnell (Orillia, 2021-12-17)

#200

I am signing because there is too much density at Orchard Point when there is much land still available for housing in the greater Orillia area. I am also concerned about the felling of trees on Orchard Point to clear land for development.

Michael Szul (Orillia, 2023-12-15)
