- Oppose personal sureties on leases for independents- Lease Agreements are unfair
- Tired of working for the Landlords
- retail rentals are too high in this over traded environment

Tired igYear on year 10% increases when your growth is static or decline
Tired of high operational costs passed on
Tired of marketing budgets that we pay for but no transparency of how it's used
Tired of rents that are disproportionate to turnover, you are working for nothing
Tired of being bullied when i reach out to landlords
Tired of lack of communication with landlords
Tired of lopsided lease agreements with no break clauses. They want 6 months if we want to renew at end, why not 6 months to quit lease
No maintenance, no improvement, just want rent
Over it

I work in the restaurant industry and it is inconceivable for landlords to expect a business that was forced to close because of circumstances that was out of their hands to pay rent. Are we not now suppose to stand together in these uncertain times? Or has the way of doing business become so cold that there is no place for compassion anymore?Edwin Tait (Cape Town, 2020-05-01)

Turnover rental is the fair method of payment. There should be no basic base rental. Included in turnover rental. The seasonal fluctuations will even out the fair turnover rental. The issue for the landlord, is how is this rental is verified. The tenant will have to have an acceptable pos system for the landlord.Gavin Winfield (Port Elizabeth, 2020-05-01)

Our Business Interruption Insurance has declined any Covid-19 related claims. In addition, all confirmed contracts were postponed until further notice which resulted in a loss of income that commenced on 17 March. The rental facility (premises) was closed on 26 March. To ensure rates (electricity do not add to additional expenses) all meters were completely shutdown. Despite the fact that no electricity was used, invoices were issued and payable.Laura Klopper (Durbanville, 2020-05-01)

Percentage rental is the only way forward In clothing and footwear retail. Currently negotiating out of our of unsustainable leases with high penalties and legal fees. Reason I have closed 5 stores, not renewed leases or exited with penalties in the 2 last year is solely because of the rental burden has become unsustainable. Moving our business online. Many young store staff as a result lost their employment.Adrian Read (Cape Town, 2020-05-02)

I'm signing because for too long landlords have screwed the small tenants and favoured the anchor / bigger chains at the cost of independants. We need an independant investigation into who pays what, and who owns what,so that we can have a fair deal, and really contribute to job / wealth creation for all!Patrick Albertyn (Empangeni, 2020-05-02)

I am signing because I would like to be able to continue running my shop. We have had no trade from the 20th of March and still have to pay rent and utilities. As a tenant in the restaurant industry I believe this is the only chance of us successfully emerging from this crisis . Landlords will be left with gaping spaces if they ignore this reality. I am a small business owner in the restaurant industry and the effect of the lockdown, & restrictions on our ability to trade is diabolical. We desperately need assistance from our landlords, not only to be able to trade under the drastic restrictions being imposed, but in navigating the post Covid-19 landscape. As we are all fully aware, the situation is evolving daily, and each development is unprecedented and new, this requires new ideas, cooperation between all stakeholders and an original response. We cannot expect to treat things the way they were.Greg Mommsen (Johannesburg, 2020-05-03)

I'm signing because small businesses need to be protected by money hungry landlords who, even in the light of an international pandemic and lockdown where a small business has been prohibited from trading and thus made no turnover at all, still expect payment of exorbitant rentals.Karen Matthyser (Germiston, 2020-05-03)

A lot of people are not earning an income because of the Covid 19. Besides rent, a lot of people have other debt to and people must also eat. No one can help for the implementation of the lockdown and everything that goes with it. A lot of people like myself can't work because of the lockdown and like myself, if i can't work, then i can't earn. Landlords must understand that people want to pay their rent, but they can'tRiaan Meyer (Cape Town, 2020-05-04)
