Help the Residents of Erie Shore Drive

I'm signing this petition because what has been happening on Erie Shore Drive is not something new. The residents have been attempting to save their homes with no help from anyone. What your doing to them should be illegal. You have done nothing until now and now you decide that they have to leave their homes, memories and investment with NO compensation except for a few sandbags and boxes. Shame, shame, shame on you Chatham Kent. This problem has been going on far too long and you have ignored the very people you say you are trying to protect? We lived there for 4 years and each storm, each flooding you did nothing. I have lost all respect for Chatham Kent, and happy I now live in West Elgin.Beth McLeod (Dutton, 2020-03-06)

Government Builds a road (dyke) sells property to build houses collects property tax then when the dyke fails the government says oh we have no money to repair it...sounds criminal to me.Chris Pollard (Victoria, 2020-03-06)

I am asking our Chatham Kent municipality, provincial and federal governments to financially compensate the residents of Erie Shore Drive. The residents have been maintaining the dike for years at no cost to the municipality. May God Bless the true dike keepers of Erie Shore Drive.

These people should get some compensation & better assistance with everything. Rentals are already hard to find. Place them in motels? That's a joke considering what most of these motels are like & what they charge. Etc. etc. One other thing i don't understand-why wasn't there some type of shuttle bus set up for people who want to help. Even if there had been a small fee to get back & forth charged.Joyce Beaulieu (Chatham, 2020-03-06)

This decision changed the life of my friends overnight. You simply cannot cut these families off from their lives and pretend that you didn't. If budget is the issue - find it. Fundraise it. Help them in installments. Its 2020 - no excuse for avoiding discussion on what resolution works for BOTH SIDES.Ashlan Potts (Beaver Bank, 2020-03-06)

I am signing because Canada is always the first to aid other countries and families who have suffered from natural disasters. We are known around the world for our big compassionate hearts. We need to see and feel this at home. This is a natural disaster and so many families are losing the beloved place they call home. Show up for your own!Ashley Derksen (Chatham, 2020-03-06)

It’s wrong! Taking people’s homes away from them with no where to go. How would you react if it was you?

What is happening to these families should not be legal. If this is allowed to happen it will be the beginning of all of having no power.Karen Girard (LaSalle, 2020-03-06)

It's ridiculous to force people out of their homes in such a short period of time. The residents now cannot protect their homes and will potentially lose absolutely everything. It's extremely unfair to do this without giving them options or compensation for this mess. The city and the province should absolutely be helping them.Devon Dakin (Chatham, 2020-03-06)

Permits were approved to build along the Dyke Rd many years ago and the residents have paid taxes over the years expecting to have the road and municipal property maintained, which all of us home owners in Chatham Kent expect from our taxes. I feel they should be entitled to some form of compensation as possibly this situation could have been avoided if this risk had been addressed years ago when the shoreline started to erode.Carol Huffman (Chatham, 2020-03-06)

I am one of the people who has been impacted for years by the non-action taken by the government to protect the shoreline, the people and the land along Lake Erie. The government very willing allows development, takes very high taxes while giving nothing other than some emergency service protections.Johnette Kelly Barrera (Blenheim, 2020-03-06)

I lived on Erie Shore Drive! These people pay their taxes but weren't provided with street lights, garbage pickup sidewalks etc., to name a few. These are their homes. Some have recently bought property and now they are told to leave. Why didn't government step in? before it got to this stage, they have known all along. Government has no problem taking their money tho!Diane Lariviere (Chatham, 2020-03-07)

I lived in CK for over 50 years and know Eireau and many of the residents well. Local government was happy to take taxes from the property owners and it is their obligation to do what can be done to safeguard all the affected homes!!John Major (London, 2020-03-07)

I am signing because Council's, past and present, have ignored this problem for over 30 years. Discussions with no plan, no action. Now the residents who pay taxes and who have put tens of thousands of dollars into maintaining the dyke, out of their own pockets, are offered no compensation??? Might set a precedence? This is just so wrong. Here is a thought: No one wants any modification to Victoria Ave. Just take that money and use it to fix the Dyke and help the home owners. Everybody is happy!Jo Anne Woodworth (St. John's, 2020-03-07)
