Miquel und Mario sind fünf Monate alt. Bisher haben sie hinter Betonmauern gelebt. Der Fußboden hatte Spalten, die ihren kleinen Füßen weh taten. Es stank nach Urin und Kot. Vor allem aber war es todlangweilig. Miquel und Mario haben noch nie Tageslicht gesehen. Bis zum 12. September 2013. Da wurden sie um 18.30 Uhr in Girona /Spanien auf einen LKW getrieben. Zusammen mit 188 anderen Schweinen, auf drei Ladeflächen. Ziel: das Schlachthaus in Bortigali/ Sardinien. Fahrtdauer ohne jeden Zwischenfall: 36 Stunden, davon fast neun Stunden auf der Fähre von Piombino nach Olbia. 24 Stunden sind gesetzlich erlaubt. Eine Versorgungspause ist aber nicht eingeplant. Futter für 190 junge Schweine ist auch nicht an Bord. Das würde den Profit minimieren. Miquel kämpft um einen Platz an den wenigen Tränken. Es ist fast 28 Grad C. Wer schwach oder ängstlich ist, hat keine Chance. Zum Beispiel Mario mit dem schwarzen Fleck auf dem Rücken. Julia und Alberto alarmieren die italienische Polizei. Der Fahrer wird zu einem Stall in Piacenza eskortiert. Der LKW wird beschlagnahmt. Der Transporteur muß 7.000 EUR Strafe bezahlen. Die jungen Schweine werden abgeladen. Verstört suchen sie überall nach Futter, viele haben Schaum vor dem Mund. Sie beißen in Stangen, Ketten, sie lecken selbst Sägemehl auf. Bis sie endlich gefüttert werden. Miquel hat jetzt 24 Stunden Ruhe. Mario hat nicht überlebt. Julia und Alberto finden ihn tot auf dem LKW. Sie sehen sich an und denken: Wenigstens wird er nicht wieder aufgeladen, morgen, wenn die 24 Stunden vorbei sind….

Above all, it was absolutely dead boring. Miquel and Mario have never seen daylight in their life. Until September 12, 2013. At 7.30 pm they were loaded on a truck in Girona / Spain. Together with 188 other pigs on three loading areas. Destination: the slaughterhouse in Bortigali / Sardinia. Travel time 36 hours best case, including nearly nine hours on the ferry from Piombino to Olbia. 24 hours maximum are allowed by law. A break to feed is not scheduled and there is no food for 190 young pigs on board anyway. That would minimize the profit. Miquel is fighting for a place at the watering place. Temperature outside is almost 28 degrees Celsius. Weak or anxious pigs have no chance. For instance Mario with the black spot on the back. Julia and Alberto call the Italian police. The truck driver is escorted to a barn in Piacenza. The truck is confiscated and the carrier has to pay a 7000 EUR penalty. The young pigs are unloaded. Distraught they are looking for food everywhere, many are foaming at their mouth. They bite into bars, chains, they lick sawdust from the ground. Until they are finally fed. Miquel can rest for 24 hours now. Mario has not survived. Julia and Alberto find him dead on the truck. They look at each other and think: At least he will not be loaded again tomorrow once the 24 hours come to an end.
