This was planned 12 years ago and we the people of stockport think it woukd be the best way to save our town.

My home town is being destroyed before my eyes! Bad planning, poor ideas and money wasted, providing little of interest to the town folk and visitors. Taking down that hideous out dated precinct and opening up the river for everyone to enjoy in a social manner is the only way forward, perhaps then the motorway running through would bring people into the town instead of taking them out to shop, socialise and spend their money elsewhere!

I now live in Australia but make visits back to Stockport (my birth place) fairly regularly. It has rendered me broken hearted each time I go back, to see the place Stockport has become. Our once characteristic town with beautiful buildings, houses and wonderful architecture has all gone.

Please can we make a start on trying to restore some of Stockport's character. I fully support the idea of restoring our river, it has so much potential for re-development. Give the Stopfordians something to be proud about again in their town.

Intelligent use of the river through our town, would increase visitors, thereby increasing trade to the town. One only has to look at York, Chester, Stratford to see how using the banks of the river to create walks and seating areas would give a wonderful ambiance to the whole of the centre of town. So please Councillors think long and hard before committing our town to another dark age of the beautiful River Mersey. After all Stockport is the source of this world famous river - we should emphasise its attributes.

Might I add further, that whoever designed the carbuncle that is Stockport's precinct should be held accountable, no less than the greedy people who voted it through.  Please, Please don't make the same mistake again - tear down the carbuncle, let our river breathe, inject life and hope for the 21st century.

I't time for a rethink, more empty shops we don't need, the river would be a big attraction to visiters to the market and underbank...

I would love to see the river be made a focal point of Stockport, with possibilities for nice food places,bars etc.

Stopfordians do not want more shops planned in Bridgewater and other places. Hugh streets are changing and it is not all about retail. Let Stockport lead on this change in the High Street by concentrating on Stockport being a pleasant pace to gather and socialise. Opening up the river would be the best way to do this!

On behalf of my Facebook Group (SOS) Save our Stockport - please listen to your residents. If you go ahead with the new development at the back of Princes Street you may as well as write Stockport off for good. A similar scheme didn't work at Grand Central so why on earth do you think it will work in the town centre? We don't want it. It will not bring any increase in footfall to the shops or market. It will kill off local trade not increase it. Grand Central brought in so many undesirables from all over the place. We don't want that again. Open up the river, make Stockport beautiful. Stop spoiling our historical town with modern monstrosities. Have you learned any lessons at all from past mistakes? It seems not.

Born and raised in Cheadle Hulme, Stockport was an exciting place to shop. I studied later at Stockport college, and later taught there. I always make numerous visits when I am back in the UK. Stockport is part of my roots.

I've lived in this area for 20 years after moving from the midlands, it was a beautiful, vibrant place when i first arrived and has slowly descended into a soulless empty place, we need to regenerate to improve the towns heart and reputation.

I think the ideas about opening the river and shops cafes etc is a really good one, it would tidy up the corner nr asda sainsburies, and get rid of those unsightly Bill boards,I think people would enjoy a relaxing cuppa and sandwich, especially the older folk, and it isnt far to walk from the main shops. Other places have done it why cant we ???
