Manatees, dolphins, local wildlife, the Gulf of Mexico and a residential neighborhood need your help!Say NO to Tommy’s Express Car Wash, 2807 Santa Barbara Boulevard/Kamal Pkwy/SE 28th Terrace and the proposal to fill in 80 ft. of the Mast Canal Property owners on the Mast Canal have been notified by the US Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE) that Sundream, Inc. has applied for a permit to construct a full-service carwash (Tommy’s Carwash) at the intersection of Santa Barbara Blvd, Kamal Parkway, and SE 28th Terrace. To accommodate, it will be necessary to fill in 80 ft. of the Mast Canal. There are already 15 car washes within a 5-mile radius in Cape Coral and not one of them backs up directly to a canal! Environmental concerns are the destruction of habitat for manatees, turtles, ducks and other wildlife as well as the potential risk of hazardous chemical leaks negatively impacting the quality of water. The Mast Canal flows into the San Carlos Canal which flows directly into the Caloosahatchee River. Manatee’s mate and give birth in this canal are often seen feeding on the vegetation. ACOE’s have dismissed our petition (100’s of signatures!) to deny this permit. The only communication they will accept are emails and written letters. And the only objection they will consider are environmental (no noise, traffic, property value implications, etc.) The deadline is 6/17. Our goal is to be granted a public hearing but that is based on how many objections they receive. So please voice your objection to this proposal to: John Policarpo US Corps of Engineers Fort Myers Regulatory Office 1520 Royal Palm Square Blvd., Suite #310 Fort Myers, FL 33919 John.N.Policarpo@usace.army.mil Please share with family, friends and co-workers to solicit their support as well.
