Stand Against Lawlessness in Noorwyk, Midrand
Petition for Community Action and Accountability
For the attention of Ward 112, Region A, Government & Municipal Officials
Region A - PICKET REFERENCE: 0438/11/2024 - Noordwyk, Midrand, Gauteng
These Noordwyk residents’ comments and signatures are in support of the picket held on 24 November 2024, 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM, which, upon completion, will be submitted to the responsible officials for their immediate attention and commitment to action to resolve these pressing issues.
We, the undersigned residents and stakeholders, declare these issues for your immediate attention and commitment to action:
1. Illegal Squatter Camp: Immediate intervention is required to remove the illegal squatter camp at the corner of Lever Road and Vodacom Boulevard.
2. Unregulated Property Developments: Curb developments that disrupt the character and safety of our suburb.
3. Traffic Violations and Management: Address reckless traffic violations and ensure adequate enforcement by JMPD and METRO Police.
4. Waste Management Failures: Tackle illegal dumping and improve waste management to maintain sanitary conditions.
5. Unauthorized Street Vending and Businesses: Enforce regulations to reduce disorder and enhance community safety.
6. Municipal Service Decline: Restore declining municipal services essential for neighborhood upkeep.
7. Vandalism of Infrastructure: Prevent the vandalism of electricity substations and traffic lights for cable theft.
8. Theft of Address Numbers: Stop the removal of address copper numbers being stolen for scrap recycling.
9. Lack of Communicty Facilities: Prioritize the development of essential facilities, such as:
- A library with free Wi-Fi.
- A community swimming pool.
- Playgrounds and public exercise equipment in parks.
- A community hall for meetings.
(Note: Similar facilities have been provided in areas like Ivory Park and Diepsloot, where rates payment is significantly lower or nonexistent.)
10. Education and Schooling Issues: Invest in improving township schools and discontinue transferring troubled or disruptive students from townships to suburban schools.
11. Taxi Rank Management: Enforce mandatory mobile toilets at illegal taxi ranks and develop proper taxi rank facilities.
12. Street Bin Maintenance: Ensure regular cleaning and emptying of street bins, similar to household refuse removal schedules.
13. Road and Traffic Improvements:
- Widen Garden/7th Road.
- Construct a bridge between Sagewood and Noordwyk Secondary School.
- Maintain road markings and repaint or enhance visibility of speed humps.
14. Misallocation of Rates: Stop diverting Noordwyk ratepayer funds to township developments, leaving Noordwyk excluded from budget allocations.
15. Fire Hydrant Damage: Address misuse of fire hydrants by illegal squatters and taxis.
16. Mugging and Robberies: Combat the mugging and robbery of joggers and residents.
17. Street Vendors and Drug Dealers: Remove all unauthorized street vendors, with immediate emphasis on those involved in drug sales.
18. Food Trailer at Noordwyk Park: Remove the food trailer at Noordwyk Park on Liebenberg Rd, as their customers openly urinate in the park.
19. Industrial Truck Parking: Prohibit illegal parking of industrial trucks within the suburb.
20. Illegal Businesses: Remove unauthorised businesses in our suburb, which negatively impact on our healthy & wellbeing with noise and air pollution, and impacting the over value of our properties.
21. Fencing & management of Noordwyk Park: Fencing and patrolling of Noordwyk park.
These challenges have led to a significant decline in safety, cleanliness, and the overall quality of life for Noordwyk residents. We demand immediate action and accountability from the authorities responsible for managing and improving our community.
Through this petition, we request:
- A written acknowledgement of our submission.
-A clear and immediately actionable plan to improve & address all issues raised above and herein.
- Regular and effective enforcement of regulations concerning illegal occupations, property developments, and traffic laws.
- A clear and actionable plan to improve waste management and prevent illegal dumping.
- Oversight and regulation of street vending and informal businesses.
- Transparent communication and accountability from government and municipal officials.
- A public meeting with all responsible Government & Municipal officials with the concerned residents providing live feedback & actionable committed written plans for the way forward.
