I agree with all the points in this petition. Things are getting out of hand in our neighbourhood. I am concerned about our safety and wellbeing, but also want to see those living on the streets being taken care of and given the help they need.

The crime in our area has got out of hand no longer do we feel safe to our streets. Drugs are being sold out in the open and we’ve been arrested by the drug dealers.

My neighbourhood is not safe. We cannot even walk on the streets for fear of being attacked

These squatter camps contribute to crime and squalor in our beautiful city.

I live in the area and things are now completely out of control ! Please do something about this. I put my home up for air B &B in December and had to refund my German guests as after a few days that said that they did not feel safe . This is also devaluing the market value of my home

We operate an architectural practice in Buitenkant Street and our property has been vandalised, pipes stolen, our boundary walls regularly breached and have to contend with human faeces on sidewalks on a daily basis. None of these are acceptable and reflects poorly on our business.

While we have empathy for the homeless we can no longer compromise the safety of our staff and visitors who have endured car break-in and threats to their personal safety. We’ve witnessed drug deals and prostitution in broad daylight on the doorstep of our business. More than our safety, the location of these informal structures have posed a grave danger to those who live there and spill out onto the street., including children.

We’ve met with councillors, supported neighbourhood security measures and have assisted the homeless neighbours when in desperate need. We regularly clean the sidewalk and have contributed to attempts to beautify our neighbourhood, all of which has been to no avail by the overwhelming pressure of the adjacent informality. It is now time that the authorities provide them with a dignified and safe place to stay and in so doing solve the pressing problem.

I am signing the petition because we who reside in properties in Gardens are threatened with rape, death and there are stabbings and assault incidents so we cannot leave our homes without fear.
In the past few years i have had various things stolen off my front area. amounting to R40k
The man in the wheelchair is verbally abusive.
Gatjie stabbed 2 people in the street outside in Buitenkant st. One died.
The people who live on the street are very abusive and scare us.

Dear Mayor and Lower Gardens Ward Councillors, I fully agree with the contents of this petition. Being a victim of mugging/robbing by our "neighbouring" vagrants myself, I feel very unsafe living in this area, let alone the stink, noise and litter. Something needs to be done urgently before Lower Gardens completely deteriorates. Thank you!

The squatting makes my immediate environment unsafe, unhealthy and negatively affects my basic human rights. Furthermore, it is not fair that some people are claiming public space for their exclusive use.

The vagrants - being outside my place of work - has decreased the amount of clients we get - they don’t want to come to us - because there is vagrants sitting outside - they don’t feel safe ! And it is getting very bad ! Very unhappy

I have lived in Hope Street for 16 years and the situation is now THE WORST in all that time. I wrote to Ian McMahon via email on 11th March outlining identical issues to those raised here.

Since 2013 I have engaged with police, law enforcement, ward counselors, and the Mayor about the ongoing crime (stabbings, sale of drugs, and illegal liquor trading on the corner of Glynn and Buitenkant St) run by gang members in our area.

Despite all the efforts and suggestions where the community has offered solutions the support from our Ward Councilor Ian and Mayor is lacking. There is no follow-up or regular check-in with the community despite all efforts of the community asking for meetings and to work with the city, law enforcement, and police.

I have on record over a decade of CCTV footage and proof of all illegal incidents and still, we find no real assistance to avoid having the same illegal activities by the same criminals out of our neighborhood. The criminals are caught and go to jail and within weeks back on our street causing the same repetitive illegal activities.

We even have footage where police were involved and bribery was done and no real consequences or action were taken.

Besides breaking in, selling drugs, and prostitution we have had assaults with guns and multiple stabbings on one of my clients one of which I almost lost my eye in an incident.

We want to work with the city Mayor and ward councilors to ensure a better safer neighborhood but we need more engagement and support to aid the community.

Please assist us.
