From punk, to Pogues, to production, Philip Chevron touched the lives of many with his music. He was also a great advocate for theatre and the arts. Philip was generous with his time, and knowledge, to his fans worldwide.

(Glasgow, 2017-12-14)

#43

I couldn't think of a more worthy recipient for all he did for Ireland's music industry

(Monaghan, 2017-12-14)

#47

I believe that Philip Chevron's artistic contribution to contemporary Irish music warrants the recognition that being made a Freeman of Dublin city would provide.

(Ketton, 2017-12-14)

#48

He absolutely needs to be celebrated and remembered as the quintessential Dubliner of his generation. Always

(Tralee, 2017-12-14)

#49

Philip is a cultural icon and inspiration to millions

(Brisbane, 2017-12-14)

#53

Phil wouldn't pull a PR stunt like bob did, and his contribution to the pogues and music in general was invaluable

(Tullamore, 2017-12-15)

#55

Genuine songwriters and musicians should always be honoured over those who 'Look After Number 1'.

(Dublin 6, 2017-12-15)

#56

I feel in my heart and soul
Is there a better reason?

(Dun laoghaire, 2017-12-15)

#58

There was no finer chronicler of the travails of Irish life than Philip Chevron. If anyone deserves such an honour, it is him.

(Chino, 2017-12-15)

#59

He was a one of a kind brilliantly talented x

(Dublin, 2017-12-15)

#60

Philip Chevron deserves this for his service to the Irish music industry and also for writing the best emigration song of all time "Thousands are Sailing " A true legend !!!

(Cahir, 2017-12-15)

#61

Thousands love and respect this man. And a true Irish hero.

(Dublin, 2017-12-15)

#63

Philip Chevron deserved to have the freedom of Dublin long ago for his contribution to - and documenting of - life in Dublin. While his life was short, his songs will live for hundreds of years to come.

(Dublin, 2017-12-15)

#66

His contribution is long-overdue the proper recognition it deserves and his influence has been for the good.

(Stranorlar, Co.Donegal, 2017-12-15)

#68

Dublin’s finest chronicler in song deserves this honour.

(Richmond, 2017-12-15)

#70

Philip was a great Dub...who, through the good and bad times, never forgot he was a Dub.

(BRAY, 2017-12-15)

#74

I support this campaign.

(Dublin, 2017-12-15)

#75

Philip Chevron lyrics were evoked a magical side of Dublin.

(Abbeyleix, 2017-12-15)

#77

If any Dubliner deserves the award, it's Bob Geldof. If he had not taken the stand he took, nothing would have been done to remove Aung San Suu Kyi from the list and Bob made it clear that he cherished the award as a proud Dubliner who stands up for human rights.

(Dublin, 2017-12-15)

#80

If all he did was write Under Cleary's Clock or Thousands Are Sailing, then that would be enough, but that was not all he did.

(Dublin, 2017-12-15)

#85

It’s only right

(Dublin, 2017-12-15)

#86

Philip Chevron's work captures Dublin better any writer has ever done. Add in the fact that he wrote beautiful melodies, and was the member of one of Ireland's most important bands, as well as of the most important Anglo-Irish bands, and produced many great songs for other artists, makes him one of the greatest representatives of Dublin ever. He is thoroughly deserving of such an honour as Freemanship of Dublin, and it is long overdue.

(Dublin, 2017-12-15)

#94

As a friend I would be so proud for him and his family for Philip to be awarded this accolade.

(Drogheda, 2017-12-15)

#99

I believe Phil is an unsung hero of Irish music.

(Cork, 2017-12-15)

#100

...Thousands are Sailing.

(Seattle, 2017-12-15)

#108

Genius

(Swansea, 2017-12-16)

#114

One of the great musicians our country has produced

(Glenbeigh, 2017-12-16)

#116

Philip Chevron was an under appreciated musical genius in a band that I believe we're vital in redefining the perception if the Irish Community in the UK and indeed at home as well. The Pogues were an important catalyst in generating the positivity and confidence that means the Irish are no longer shunned and treated as 'Thick Micks' but are internationally renowned for their good humour, intelligence and positivity. Acknowledging Philip Chevrons key role in that process would be an important statement about how modern Irish society still holds to those positive values in a world that appears to be turning in on itself into negativity and mutual mistrust.

(Birmingham, 2017-12-16)

#118

Philip made me proud to be Irish,to be of Dublin. His songs changed my life and he should have have had that honour long ago.

(London, 2017-12-16)

#119

The wee man deserves the honour.

(Sanquhar, 2017-12-16)

#121

While I respect Mr Geldof's decision to hand back his award on ethical grounds, he did hand it back. Now I think Mr Chevron is truly deserving of this recognition (even if he can't be around to enjoy it). However, if the Council should feel like re-granting Bob his award now that he's withdrawn his objection, then I'd be fine with BOTH receiving the award. Otherwise, give it to Phil.

(Dublin, 2017-12-16)

#122

I support this cause.

(Dublin, 2017-12-16)

#125

A great candidate… a great man. Noble and thoughtful.

(Dublin, 2017-12-16)

#127

He deserves recognition

(Dublin, 2017-12-16)

(Dublin, 2017-12-17)

#145

Phil Chevron because the man shaped my teenage years, a musical genius and an absolute gentleman

(Nenagh, 2017-12-17)

#147

Philip was one of Dublin's most talented sons, his work shaped by growing up in this city. I use his songs in my sociology classes to a new generation of young Dubliners. Dublin sings Philips songs to me when I walk around her streets, past Mt Jerome, down Golden Lane and Under Clerys Clock.

(Dublin, 2017-12-17)

#150

The man

(Boston, 2017-12-17)

#151

For some, Dublin will always be part Ghostown, and Philip's songs will echo through its streets.

(Dublin, 2017-12-18)

#160

Philip was an amazing man who stod up for what he belive in

(Averøy, 2017-12-18)

#165

Phil Chevron made an enormous contribution to the cultural landscape of Ireland and he deserves every possible recognition and also his songs like Thousands are sailing with the Pogues and Under Cleary’s Clock with the Radiators from Space recall the life and times of a whole generation and beyond!

(Dublin and Cork county, 2017-12-18)

#167

I'm signing because Phil was pure class. I share a birthday with Phil and I think about him most days but not because of that but because of the music, pure and simple. No-one wrote songs like he did and they remain timeless to this day. I'm often amazed artist don't do more covers of his fantastic songs. I listen to my old Radiators vinyls all of the time and what an embarrassment of riches there with not just one outstanding songwriter, but two. They are just totally unlike anything anyone else was doing. Artisticly brave he wrote Under Clery's Clock in times very different to the tolerant times now. He donated his guitars to prisoners to aid their rehabilitation. He wrote Thousands Are Sailing, a song that still resonates with Irish people all over the world and is probably more relevant now than ever before. Without spouting on any further I'lll say that I'm delighted with the suggestion that Phil be posthumously honoured with the Freedom Of Dublin. I can't of anyone more deserving of that honour.

(Wexford, 2017-12-18)

#168

Philip was a true gentleman of Dublin. A gifted writer and musician who always had time for his fans. An ambassador for the city as he traveled the world over.

(Templemore, 2017-12-18)
