Support our local "Comet Swimming Club". Demand they review their decision to give our local "Learn to swim programme" to an International company.

My brother and i swam for comet when I was younger. We were from Wairoa and Greg Meade, head coach of Comet at the time took us under his wing to coach us and email us training sessions, as our long distance coach. Comet are all about community, and have served Gisborne for years, they absolutley deserve the contract over anyone else especially iver an international company that I suspect was the cheapest option. It seems that somebody at council without any swimming or other water sports background or local community knowledge, has not only dropped the ball but lost the ball completely.

The comet swimming club have serviced our communities within Te Tairawhiti through many generations and are local. GDC is a disgrace they say to support local and are doing the exact opposite. Disgusting way to treat a dedicated team of people that go above n beyond for our kids.

Vicky Teariki (Gisborne , 2023-06-05)

#1468

Unfortunately the councils decision not to support a local community business is a reflection on many businesses in Gisborne, the difference is that unlike most other businesses the council are supposed to be representing the district and making decisions in the best interest of Tairawhiti. And when they publicly promote supporting Gisborne and then do this it smacks of hypocrisy

stuart Harbottle (Gisborne, 2023-06-05)

Swimming tuition in Gisborne has always been led by the local clubs & led well in my day by Olympic & Gisborne clubs then by Comet together with the Surf clubs Bringing commercial involvement in will only cost local families & subsequently reduce numbers able to afford this necessity & result in people drowning because needing to pay to learn a necessary skill which has always been freely available to Gisborne & local residents Shame on your council!

#1499

I think it is unfair that when the Govt has provided so much money for this project, which was for our community, the council has decided to give away the learn to swim programme to an overseas company, which will cost them patronage at the new pool.

Holly McIldowie (Gisborne, 2023-06-05)

#1503

My nephew does his swimming lessons with comet and he absolutely loves it. We have seen him thrive and his confidence in swimming grow doing this program. It would be a great loss to see these changes happen if the comet program is removed.

My 3 year old has done swimming with comet since she was 6months old. The teachers are amazing and committed to providing our tamariki with such a valuable life skill. THIS IS NOT OK !!!!

Denise McIntyre (Gisborne, 2023-06-05)

#1546

I care about the Tairāwhiti community. I believe it is unethical to outsource jobs to Australia when swimming classes are so important in a place like te Tairāwhiti. Local teachers know more about local swimming conditions, and they have valuable connections to the moana and awa.

I also think it is unethical to outsource jobs to Australia when Aotearoa is facing an extremely high cost of living. Australia has enough; their people are some of the wealthiest, on average, in the world. We need to look after our people and our communities first, and that means keeping people in their jobs. If we want a vibrant community, people’s basic needs must be met.

I’m signing because it is absolutely disgraceful supporting overseas companies to gain profit from our people. We should always feed money to local businesses, the government have done enough to squash small businesses! Get a grip GDC and act like you care for our community.

Murrell Hollie (Gisborne , 2023-06-05)

#1553

This was a very poor decision by Council. There should have been consultation with Comet on providing these additional benefits, at the very least. Come on Council. Keep it local! Review your decision.

This is shocking. Comet swim club have done a fantastic job at teaching our children to swim for over 65 years. Where is our councils support for local business and loyalty. Not good enough.. this needs to be sorted and the right thi g needs to be done.

Lisa Hill (Gisborne, 2023-06-05)

#1564

The GDC is disgusting in their hypocrisy of “Support Local”. Comet are the ones to help our locals learn to swim . The so called “additional benefits” of awarding the contract to an overseas company are just ridiculous.
