In my opinion JET facilities is still helpful for development of new approaches and technologies of fusion in different direction including laser plasma stimulated process.Paata Kervalishvili (Tbilisi, Georgia, 2023-10-24)
#606
I am signing because extension of JET experiments are absolutely valuable for fusion research.Kenji Tnaka (Toki, 2023-10-24)
#608
There is no reason NOT to extend the license life of this wonderful facility that has contributed so much to our understanding of burning plasma and the promise of nearly unlimited fusion power for future generations.Roberto Sanabria (Oak Ridge, 2023-10-24)
#611
It's hard to see how the closure of JET is consistent with a desire to accelerate the route to commercial fusion power, especially given its unique capabilities (most notably tritium plasma) and the delays to ITER.Peter William Blatchford (Aylesbury, 2023-10-24)
#619
Although JET has been in operation for quite some time, it is still a tokamak with unique characteristics, where the most significant advances in this field have been achieved. Closing it when ITER operation is being delayed is nonsense.Marco Ariola (Napoli, 2023-10-24)
#622
I firmly support the JET project.Jennifer Boender (Oxford, 2023-10-24)
#623
There are many experiments that may yet be run on JET to better ITER and other fusion efforts. I believe that the realisable benefits (in dollars) may dwarf the costs in the medium and long term.Francisco Perez Smith (Abingdon, 2023-10-24)
#625
It's typically short sighted to drop a useful research tool that's still required. Be nice to not be typical for once.Adrian Barnard (Didcot, 2023-10-24)
#629
The delay in bringing ITER online means there would be a huge void without JET, not least in the area of training and machine control that advanced computing & ML brings.Richard Clarke (Kendal, 2023-10-25)
#632
JET provides invaluable research to the fusion community and there is currently no other operational deuterium-tritium machine in the world.Jack Barnes (Culham, 2023-10-25)
#639
We cannot restrict science that contributes to saving lives in the future.Azaad Alli (Reading, 2023-10-25)
#641
I agree with the reasons stated in the petition and with many of the reasons of other signatories. There is much that JET can still offer.Hanah Arthur (Harwell, 2023-10-25)
#642
The JET operation is very important for fusion research.Fabio Camilo de Souza (Didcot, 2023-10-25)
#644
I sign because it is important to design clean technology for the future!Filip Faes (Antwerp, 2023-10-25)
#646
I accepted the idea of decommissioning JET because I did not realise that keeping JET operating was an option - I thought it *had* to be decommissioned because it is end of life. But if you can do some refurbishment and keep it running, then why wouldn't you? Decommissioning now seems like a wasted opportunity to get more value out of the investment. Plus, how are we to maintain D-T operator skills between now and ITER / STEP?Stephen Biggs-Fox (York, 2023-10-25)
#647
JET would be very useful to support ITER for its rebaselining plans.Samantha Barnett (Birmingham, 2023-10-25)
#653
Tritium breeding and transport is key to realizability of a fusion device while one of the most poorly understood phenomenon. JET provides data not found anywhere else to test computational models which can accelerate commercialization of fusion power.Arpan Sircar (Knoxville, TN, 2023-10-25)
#655
JET is a facility that can still contribute significantly to the understanding the physics and engineering requirements for both ITER and next generation fusion devices. It is one of the few devices in the world where DT experiments have been run and could potentially be run in the future. It would be beneficial to all involved if the UK, UKAEA, EuroFusion, ITER, the ITER member states, and any other interested parties could develop a framework to support on-going research and development at JET.David Elder (Toronto, 2023-10-25)
#670
I have been working on JET data/experiments since 1995 and JET has still a lot to offer with the proposed enhancements. Minding ITER is necessarily to some extent a moving target e.g. new focus on W wall, it will have a lot to gain by further lessons learned by targeted JET experiments especially with the enhanced capabilities.Rui Coelho (Lisbon, 2023-10-25)
#673
I also see the value to the wider fusion community in extending the life of JETDouglas Craven (Oxford, 2023-10-25)
#676
If JET can continue to do useful fusion research, it should do so.Robert Davies (Greifswald, 2023-10-25)
#678
I don't understand why we would shut down an experiment that is yielding some of the best results in the field. Results which are closest to those of future power plants. Results which are crucial to the next steps. Results which we cannot obtain without without JET since it is (and will remain for many years to come) the only DT machine operating at full specs. This decision is even more ridiculous than the shutdown of ALCATOR-CMOD!Alexis Devitre (Boston, 2023-10-25)
#679
JET is legendary, so if it's run its main experimental program, why not at least keep it around as a testbed for discovery verification. Say that ITER finds a new [i.e.] "H^2" mode confinement regime. You need other tokamaks - like JET - around to verify these regimes can be replicated on other devices. Just my two cents.Alexander Card (Garching, 2023-10-25)
#682
We need as many operating large tokamaks as possible to prepare for a tokamak-fusion industry.Alexander Battey (San Diego, 2023-10-25)
#684
This machine still has a lot to contribute to the fusion community in view of the ITER rebaselining. So let's turn JET into JIT!Julien Denis (Marseille, 2023-10-25)
#687
I'm singing the petition because the extension can provide crucial data on Tritium and deuterium experiments, which can help to forecast future ITER high energy scenarios.Francisco Calderon (Antofagasta, 2023-10-26)
#690
JET has contributed unvaluably to the scientific research field, becoming the leading fusion device in Europe so far, and still it can contribute significantly. Keeping it "burning" would help shorten the path towards the realization of nuclear fusion as an energy sourceRiccardo De Luca (Frascati, 2023-10-26)
#696
JET is a unique fusion facility that provides real time Tokomak fusion experiments and is invaluable for scientific plasma study.robert eade (Oxford, 2023-10-26)
#700
I don't have a lot of info on the subject, but if UKAEA staff feel strongly that JET can continue to be useful then it may be worth discussing further.Jonny Cobb (Oxford, 2023-10-26)
#703
Although I have stopped working on tokamak research many years ago, my experience at TFTR taught me about the importance of working with DT plasmas on a large machine. JET is the only facility in the world left with DT operational capabilities. It should be made available for international collaborations until ITER, or a meaningful DT fusion machine in a private enterprise comes on line.Emil Ruskov (Irvine, 2023-10-26)
#705
JET should be preserved for future generations for it's uniqueness and contribution to science progression.Eliza Burt (Newbury, 2023-10-26)
#708
Because JET is the most valuable resource IN Europe to study the technical difficulties in the realisation and operation of the next phase tokamak.Agostino Celora (Milano, 2023-10-26)
#712
I'm signing because JET represents the best tokamak as "trade d'union" with ITER, which will be built in Cadarache (South of France)Salvatore Almaviva (Frascati, 2023-10-26)
#716
I believe that the project is still very relevant and can still have a big scientific and technological impact.Martino Ferrari (Aix-en-Provence, 2023-10-26)
#717
I agree with this idea for JET.Matthew Butcher (PRESTON, 2023-10-26)
#719
Continuation of JET enables other work not mentioned in petition, the development and proof of new control systems with abilities far above those used in all previous decades - these more sophisticated controls (MARTe2) need evaluation on a real large reactor i.e. JET.Peter Gatehouse (Culham, 2023-10-26)
#721
As others have pointed out, JET is the only fusion device worldwide that is capable of operating with DT fusion plasma and therefore represents the most advanced boundary of fusion research. It is also a facility where fusion researchers, and especially young fusion researchers, can learn how to operate a device operating at this level. Operation of ITER with DT fusion fuel is still many years in the future, and there are significant technical and operational problems to overcome before DT operation is secure. Thus to close JET at this stage is taking a huge risk with the future of fusion research.Alan Costley (Henley-on-Thames, 2023-10-26)
#731
We need sources of truth to validate the simulators we use for the engineering design of tokamaks. We should create an opportunity to operate JET in an engineering oriented manner to accelerate fusion programmes internationally instead of dismantling it now.Adam Parrott (Oxford, 2023-10-27)
#734
JET still has alot to offer and it would a travesty to decommission it so early.Josh Mitchell (Abingdon, 2023-10-27)
#738
ITER is still a long way off. Maintaining JET means furthering fusion research.Timothy Tierney (Fitchburg, 2023-10-27)
#741
JET is a mature facility with good diagnostics that can still address key questions and showstoppers that no other facility can presently address. This includes mitigating tungsten contamination in a larger machine similar to ITER. The world program has very few operating facilities, and it is a shame to lose this highly useful, large capital investment at its peak. The facility should be opened up for meaningful external collaboration in the public sector, where there is a strong need for fundamental research facilities.Darin Ernst (Cambridge, MA, 2023-10-27)
#746
I believe that JET should remain operational at least until ITER is in operation.Federico Coto Vílchez (Prague, 2023-10-28)
#749
JET is the only machine in the world that operate in DT. The expertise on DT at JET is essential for the world fusion community at least until a new burning plasma experiment starts.Naoto Tsujii (Kashiwa, 2023-10-29)
#751
There is so much important physics to be done on Jet towards the advancement of fusion enery science.Jill Perry (Madison, 2023-10-30)
#756
The team at JET are world leaders in fusion research. Many of their activities, which include record breaking performances of the machine, will be invaluable for fusion research, in particular leading to important information about the construction and future activities of ITER.Paul Steadman (Abingdon, 2023-10-30)
#757
JET is an important facility for Fusion and still has life left in the facility, In fact it has recently been performing better than ever. There is still interesting and useful research that can be done with this facility. It would also be a good stopgap and training facility pending ITER coming on-line.John Waterhouse (Wantage, 2023-10-30)
#762
I think DT fusion experiments are important!!Shon Mackie (Cambridge, 2023-10-30)
#770
We have so fee D-T capable devices, especially devices of this size. It feels petty and self-destructive to decommission this machine while ITER still remains far from plasma-ready.Ryan Albosta (Madison, 2023-10-31)
#773
I think it should be around to support other experimentsNicola Coad (Wantage, 2023-10-31)
#774
JET is highly relevant to bridge the gap to ITER and sustain expertise in experimental fusion plasma physics.Christopher Albert (Graz, 2023-10-31)
#776
JET is the world's best tokamak and it ought to produce results until ITER comes online.Amelia Cavallaro (Watertown, 2023-10-31)
#784
It will be a mistake not to continue the only tokamak that can run D-T experiments.K C shaing (Tainan City, 2023-11-01)
#793
The JET facilities are unique in the fusion word.Calin Atanasiu (Stamford, 2023-11-01)
#795
JET is a valuable resource not only for fusion development but also for atomic physics research, in particular the physics of highly stripped ions of heavy elements.Damian Audley (Groningen, 2023-11-01)
#798
Climate change is upon us. I believe my generation, and future generations, should be prepared to address the energy needs of our society in order to provide a stable future. Fusion energy is a promising, but still-developing path forward, and JET has been involved in this path for many decades. The device and the scientists that work on it are a finite resource, one that will continue to pay dividends, IF we pay it forward. I believe it is in our (as a society) best interest to make the best of this unique resource, particularly with ITER on the near horizon.Steven Bromley (Auburn, 2023-11-01)
