I taught and supervised undergraduate and postgraduate international students for many years. They contribute to our economy through their substantial course fees, living and working here, and undertaking their research and contribution to learning. Their work in the university (tutoring etc) and in the community (part time, casual wok) has dried up; many have no income. They are excluded from Medicare and benefits. Not all are from well-off families. and some are here with their families while they study. The moral, compassionate and right thing to do is to offer our international students some financial assistance to tide them over during this pandemic. There is only so much our charities and church & multicultural groups and cafes can do to help them with food and a roof over their heads.

I am a skilled migrant on 489 visas, already applied for PR 887 visa.
Full time permanent employee, paying taxes since last two years.
Same for my wife. We tax paying, law abiding temporary residents, with a vision to live and work here permanently, moved here leaving our jobs and country for a brighter future.
Now because of COVID-19, are on verge of losing our job.
We need support during this time. May be for 3-6 months.
So we can feel that our life changing decision to move here was a right one.

I personally am one of these affected workers. I am on a bridging visa while I wait for my partnership visa to be finalized, a process that takes around three years.... Now I am unable to work due to coronavirus and my partner and I are struggling to make ends meet. I have been a tax-paying resident for three years now and also paid over $8,000AUD for my partner visa. It is unfair then that I am not eligible for assistance.

I have lost my job, my income, the ability to pay rent and school fees.
I have been in Australia for 4 years, worked hard, paid my taxes, had the genuine intention to call Australia home. Being left in the cold with no support whatsoever has influenced my life and my goals in such a negative way, it feels like people like me are deemed unworthy to be in this country.

#6536

I’m signing because i think we, those who are holding temporary visas, are deserved financial support from the government. We are contribute partly to Australia though international student’s tuition fees, income taxes, super, etc since we arrived at Australia. And now all the people are affected by the pandemic but only Australian citizens are eligible for financial support, it would be unfair and somehow ‘discriminatory’ against those holding temporary visas.

I believe the government should offer some form of assistance to long term temporary visa holders in these difficult times. Many are Australians in all but name and are on the long and difficult path to citizenship, working a load of jobs that Aussies won’t touch, often exploited and in a vulnerable position.
Pushing more people towards the poverty line is not in Australia’s best interest.

Tom Foss (Perth, 2020-04-01)

I’m signing because I’ve been paying tax in Australia for the last 5 years. I’m now on a skilled sponsorship visa working in the fire sprinkler / suppression industry. Which saves lives of everyday Australians when it’s needed. And this government is doing nothing to help me. My hours have been reduced by more than half. I’m in the process of starting to apply for PR but this whole treatment from the government has me second guessing if I want to stay in this country. Something needs to be done to help.

Callum Johnson (Sydney, 2020-04-01)
