I am signing because JET is a unique facility that is still producing top-notch results in terms of advancing the fusion program. ITER is still a few years away and Europe and G. Britain cannot afford, in my opinion, not having a facility such as JET online producing scientific and technological results and advancing the tokamak concept until that happens.Raul Sanchez (Madrid, 2023-10-19)
#404
Closing JET leaves the community with no experimental facility of such size and capabilities (e.g. D-T handling) until ITER is available. There are still experiments that can be done.Rich Kembleton (Garching, 2023-10-19)

Much essential scientific data for ITER and the development of fusion is needed and can be provided by JET. Its closure will mean a serious loss of investment, knowledge, and skills. It is more important now that ITER is delayed.Mike Loughlin (Knoxville, 2023-10-19)

JET is breaking records and creating great public awareness of Fusion as a solution for our long term power needs. Scrapping JET now seems at odds with our targets on clean energy.JET should continue operations and ITER like experiments can provide valuable data.
Mark Allinson (Didcot, 2023-10-19)

I want to sign this petition because the JET facilities represent a cornerstone in the fusion research community. The advancements and potential they offer are indispensable for the global push towards sustainable and clean energy solutions. It is essential to invest in and prolong the lifespan of such vital scientific infrastructures to ensure continuous growth, knowledge transfer, and to bridge the technological gap between current research and future large-scale facilities. JET's historical significance and recent accomplishments highlight the importance of this facility, and ceasing its operations would indeed be a setback for global fusion research. As a proponent of sustainable energy solutions and scientific advancement, I firmly believe in the value JET brings to the table and urge for its renewal and upgrade.Adwiteey Mauriya (Lisbon, 2023-10-19)

JET needs to continue working until ITER is fully operationalRuy Pepe da Silvaa (São Paulo, 2023-10-19)
#426
JET has unique features and capabilities. It's difficult to overestimate the significance of the results obtained here, and this facility could continue to provide the essential contribution to further fusion research, especially considering the new ITER baseline.Petr Sdvizhenskii (Moscow, 2023-10-19)
#427
I think that ending the machine closest to ITER before the latter is near start of operation will lead to loss of knowledge, expertise and people needed for operating ITER. The shift to dominant electron heating scenarios in ITER would require prior check of their efficiency in a large machine, and if possible with DT plasmas. Otherwsise, such a choice is just a gamble, especially given the low performance, in terms of ion heating, of similar scenarios in smaller machines.Raymond Koch (Verviers, 2023-10-19)
#432
DT campaigns had outstanding success in fusion alpha-particle studies. The proposed extention of JET life could significantly magnifying this success. Indeed, installing the boron dropper can make JET a biggest 3-alpha fusion machine in the world, using the aneutronic B-p fusion. Since JET is equipped with a world-class alpha-diagnostic, JET could provide further success in alpha-physics studies.Vasily Kiptily (Didcot, 2023-10-19)
#433
I believe JET can still play a role in ITER support. Moreover I think also some of the ITER magnetic diagnostics can be installed at JET to assess their design.

Why would you let such an expensive thing rot when we're in the home stretch and need more answers.Mitchell Clark (San Diego, 2023-10-19)
#436
I think the exploration of burning plasma physics are the one of the most important issues in nuclear fusion research and JET is the only machine which can provide the opportunity to explore them. Especially the role of tungsten on burnig plasmas must be surveyed before the ITER opeartion. Considering the expeced delay of ITER operation and increasing demand for fusion energy, we should use the JET to accelerate the fusion research.Masaki Osakabe (土岐市, 2023-10-19)

A timely and convincing appeal to the worldwide fusion community to take stock of the unavoidability of not stopping JET now.Roger Weynants (Leuven, 2023-10-19)
#449
JET is the only magnetic confinement device in the world that can currently burn DT and study burning plasma physics. With a well focused programme and some uogrades may be able to demostrate Q> 1 , just like NIF did on 5 Dec 2022. Q> 1 will generate even more enthusiasm about Fusion and trigger more investments from the private sector .(Not signing on behalf of institution)Jesus Romero (Aliso Viejo, 2023-10-19)

#456
do believe in the importance of JET in this context. It can still provide a fundamental contribution to Fusion research, while other experiments are being designed and realised. Closing a perfectly working machine, with no alternative in view, would be a scientific nonsense.Marco Zerbini (Frascati, 2023-10-20)
#459
JET is indeed a unique device (size, DT,..) in the current fusion landscape. By closing JET, there is a significant risk of expertise and know-how losses. And as explained in the petition, JET could answer pending scientific issues and mitigate risks for the operation of ITER.Yann Camenen (Marseille, 2023-10-20)
#469
JET has to continue for the delay of ITER. I worked on ECRH proposal for JET in the pastand I think it is important now to add this system at JET helping the progress in DT operation.

To preserve the unique JET infrastructure & expertise and the established international collaboration, as well as to enable the transfer of knowledge to a new generation. All this is vital for the timely development of fusion as a sustainable energy source.Guido Van Oost (Ghent, 2023-10-20)
#485
JET is a fully functional and very capable experimental device, that will leave a gap in fusion research until ITER starts plasma operations. It allows training of new staff, and I know that for myself and my career it has contributed immensely. The field of plasma control is essential for future devices and power plants, which is the only route to achieve high-performance and exception handling capabilities in all future devices.
Therefore, given it's size and DT capabilities, having JET for control experiments and as a testbed for control will benefit the fusion programme in the very long term.
Daniel Valcarcel (Sutton Courtenay, 2023-10-20)
#487
From a scientific and technological point of view, the possibility of upgrading and extending JET operation needs to be seriously discussed, in view of its recent results, its unique experimental capabilities and last but not least, the delays to ITER.Alessandro Pau (Lausanne, 2023-10-20)
#488
Essential physics items, as edge ion temperature screening or high SOL opaqueness can only potentially seen in JET before JT60-SA operates and still then it would be the only metallic machine.Jörg Hobirk (Garching, 2023-10-20)
#494
JET is still useful as largest tokamak in physics and also for technical investigation including remote handling. JET could extend till start of DT operation of ITER to maintain inertia of magnetic fusion research.Mitsuru Kikuchi (Mito, 2023-10-20)
#499
Jet is the only existing experiment capable of running DT experiments in magnetic fusion plasmas. There is a huge amount of things we still can learn with the existing equipment and even more with upgrades as mentioned in the petition. Heating of ITER is an issue, in particular starting the heating to operation conditions. Disruption mitigation techniques have to be improved. A new ITER like wall would make senseMathias Richard Dr Brix (Oxford, 2023-10-20)

Fusion has a lot of momentum at present, especially with the UK Government. Can the fusion community really afford a 15-year fallow period with no research taking place? Make the decision a scientific one, not a political one.Alan Horton (Abingdon, 2023-10-20)

Solely to have a major tokamak in Europe running, as AUG might close down, and next generation of people need to have experience. Planning and installing ECRH will take some years for sure....Stefan Schmuck (Manosque, 2023-10-20)
#535
The closure of JET will create a huge gap in the fusion device landscape until ITER operations begin. It is concerning that we risk losing the expertise gained from operating devices of this scale and using tritium. JET, especially with certain enhancements, can still significantly contribute to the preparation of ITER scenarios as well as to the clarification of physics questions.Athina Kappatou (Munich, 2023-10-20)
#538
We need JET to flesh out new physics questions that have arisen from re-baselining ITER. Further, it is one of the few machines that can pursue alpha physics meaningfully and is the closest to being a reactor test bed than any other machine at present.Genevieve DeGrandchamp (San Diego, 2023-10-20)
#542
I think this project has potential to help other projectsRebecca Alder (Didcot, 2023-10-21)
#543
Even a complete replacement of the JET machine within the existing Culham Site with its complete infrastructure and SQEP personnel would be a tiny fraction of the completion cost of ITER and could be completed before that machine is ready for first plasma!Furthermore, JET is of a size and scale which makes it relevant not just to ITER, but also the machines of private initiatives already on-going.
I fully support this petition and initiative.
John Fanthome (Great Missenden, 2023-10-21)
#545
JET is a unique fusion device currently at the peak of its performance and scientific results, and the only one with the capability of studying DT plasmas for a few more years. The proposed upgrades could extend significantly its scientific capabilities and increase its relevance to future reactor operations. This extension would bridge the gap until future fusion devices come into operationMatteo Baruzzo (Padova, 2023-10-21)

I's important to follow this work on nuclear fusion machines.Manuel Alonso (Lisbon, 2023-10-21)
#547
In ITER, the plasma-facing wall will be full-tungsten due to the rebaselining. In the current European and Japanese DEMO designs, the plasma-facing wall is all-tungsten.Considering that experiments in JT-60SA will not be performed for several years yet and that the first plasma-facing material in JT-60SA is carbon, full-tungsten plasma-facing wall experiments in JET would be a very significant contribution to magnetic confinement fusion research. I hope the JET experiment will continue and the full-tungsten plasma-facing wall will be implemented.

If JET is shut down now there will be no DT capable high power tokamak running for the foreseeable future. We will lose the ability to respond to any problems that are realised while ITER is in construction. It is my opinion that ITER will continue to suffer delays and may well not come into for D-T operation for many decades. I was an Experimental Coordinator working in Garching, on the original ITER design over twenty years ago, I really believe in fusion but it is going to take a long time, to ensure continuity we really need to extend JET operation, preferably to overlap the initial startup of ITER.Phil Edmonds

JET has shown to be a valuable asset for ITER. It just seems a bad move to dismantle it, specially now that DT experiments provided such a relevant insight.Dani Gallart Escolà (Barcelona, 2023-10-22)
#571
ITER has its problems with delays and budget, so JET will still be necessary.Jacob Shin (Philadelphia, 2023-10-23)
#572
The JET facilities are unique in the world. JET has served as a test bed for new science and technology developments in support of ITER over the past decades. The dedication and expertise of the current JET team, JET’s size, its metal wall, its unique tritium licence and facilities to operate D-T plasmas, its capability to characterise fusion born neutrons and alpha particles, all make JET an extremely valuable asset for the fusion community. Its potential for fusion research is far from exhausted as demonstrated by recent fusion energy records. Studies carried out with Tritium and Deuterium-Tritium plasmas are still ongoing and expected to continue to provide extremely valuable information for next step devices.ITER needs JET!
ITER will be failed without JET support!
Bili Ling (Hefei, 2023-10-23)

I believe JET needs to stay operational up until the launch of ITER.Виталий Красильников (Vinon Sur Verdon, 2023-10-23)
#583
An upgraded JET is obviously what the international fusion community needs for the next > 10 years. We scientists must lead in acknowledging that Brexit is behind us: Let's use the robust copper magnets in JET to run the demanding fusion experiments needed, for us all to learn from, rather than running them more than decade from now, under commercial confidentiality with the very high risk (brittle) superconducting fusion systems currently being planned/constructed.Professor Hampshire (Durham, 2023-10-23)
#599
I strongly endorse to continue the JET experiments which are necessary for the success of the ITER, 50MW D-T burning Experiments.Osamu Motojima (Nara, 2023-10-24)

JET is a unique machine that will leave a large chasm in fusion experimental machines. It will be decades before we have a viable DT capable experimental machine open to international collaborations and is thus vital for retention of know-how and knowledge for it to stay open.Bor Kos (Jesenice, 2023-10-24)
