I wholeheartedly support this sale. Anyone can see that it is just to allow the community who originally invested in the property to reclaim the property at a fair price.

Since it can be argued that neighborhood revitalization is not the responsibility of the school system, let’s focus on ways the proposed community center would benefit Moore County Schools. First of all, by uplifting families with children in our schools, the project has potential to directly improve student outcomes. Second, it will be an educational resource available to the schools. Thirdly, the incentive for recruiting teachers of color would be a great asset to our schools’ mission. I know everyone on the Board of Education is aware of the difficulty of recruiting diverse teacher candidates, as well as the research showing strikingly improved outcomes for Black students who have just one Black teacher during their elementary years.

I personally also want to see this happen because the cultural center would enrich our county and enhance our reputation. Please, authorize the sale to SPLHT!

I support my friends, classmates, former students, community colleagues, fellow ministers, and the entire community in West Southern Pines with their efforts to purchase this school. I attended several activities as a child in West Southern Pines (piano lessons - trained classically and have served professionally as a minister of music and musician since teenage years; events led by sororities and non-profit organizations), and I continue to attend and assist with events sponsored by West Southern Pines citizens for the youths, elderly, and entrepreneurs, as well as programs relative to Black History/Cultural Arts. I am a retired community college educator, and continue to work as a TV/radio host/producer, videographer, storyteller/"edutainer"/musician/dance presenter, tutor for math/reading, and minister/life mentor.

I truly believe that the plan put forth by the Southern Pines Land and Housing Trust to develop the So. Pines Primary School site will benefit the entire town of Southern Pines and will serve as a wonderful center for the African American history, cultural arts and business. Such a use would far outweigh any development by outsiders.

As a former resident of Southern Pines, and as someone who worked with many of the citizens of the West Southern Pines neighborhood, I know what this property means to them and what redeveloping it themselves could mean for their community.

Julianna Lyle (Clemson, SC, 2021-05-18)

#307

I'm signing because as a resident with MANY TIES to Southern Pines North Carolina. The I know the importance of the center. Southern Pines needs a landmark that defines and stands for the history and future of Southern Pines. There should be something geared more towards the community, family, most importantly the kids. There is more to my community then building UNAFFORDABLE HOUSING AND GENTRIFICATION.

Teanna Martin (Southern Pines, 2021-05-19)

#308

Friends who live in town support the idea, and I would love, when i get to visit again, to see this!

Given the history of this town, this cultural center is long overdue.

Loren Mindell (Southern Pines, 2021-05-28)

#312

I support the preservation of historic Black properties, and specifically those that have been foundational in the culture and history of segregated America. The communities that supported and sustained these institutions should be in a position to directly control the repurposing of these properties in order to help correct economic decline by repurposing them as revenue generators that serve to improve the adjoining community by regenerating local small businesses and to incubate new ones.

B. Ronald Scales (Taylortown, 2021-06-02)

#314

As the Elementary School this was my alma mater! The School Board should honor the original deed and give this school back to West Southern Pines community!

The theft of this land is a stain of racism and white supremacy violating the Constitutiin of The United States and the principles the perpetrators swote to protect. I would further support prosecution of said officials and perpetrators, the confiscation of their estates from all heirs and assigns for the purpose of restitution to the victims of the crimes of greed.

Edward Halloran (Houston, 2021-06-27)

#324

Our community would greatly benefit from this.

Taylor Murphy (Southern Pines, 2021-06-27)
