Support our local "Comet Swimming Club". Demand they review their decision to give our local "Learn to swim programme" to an International company.

I am LOCAL, and have and always will support LOCAL in every way. The COMET Swimming Club is no different. 1 You the GDC, WHAT ARE YOU HERE FOR? You are here for your own whanau. PROTECT AND CARE FOR THEM. 2 Tairawhiti is one of the most economically deficit areas in NZ. AND YOU GDC WANT TO HELP ANOTHER ECONOMY NOT EVEN IN OUR OWN AOTEAROA. 3 COMET SWIMMING CLUB has been on the Gisborne scene before nearly ALL OF YOU ON GDC WERE BORN. This is like trampling on your Whakapapa (Your Elders), TAKAHIA TE MANA O TOU WHANAU. 4 Shame on you GDC. BUY AND GIVE BACK LOCAL, I would not be surprised if the majority of Comet club members are GDC ratepayers.
Well I had my gripe, 1st time ever.
GDC PLEASE RECONSIDER YOUR DECISION AND KEEP SUPPORTING LOCAL. Nga mihi Winnie.

Win Douglas (Gisborne , 2023-06-07)

I know the value of local business and the quality of service Comet LTS has given the community for years

#2204

We should be supporting our local businesses.

Jacklyn Cameron (Gisborne , 2023-06-07)

#2205

Our children were taught to swim by Comet.
This service should be run by a local company who know and understand the needs of Tairawhiti and the money stays in Gisborne.

Boyd Chamberlain (Gisborne, 2023-06-07)

#2206

I’m signing this because this is the most ridiculous contract the council could have ever signed. We have an amazing swim school here that has served our community for decades. Clearly whoever made the decision is not a local? Because a local wouldn’t let this happen?

Kate Thorpe (Gisborne , 2023-06-07)

#2207

My sister that lives in Gisborne takes her kids to learn to swim at the Comet swimming club. I want to support her by signing this petition to allow this to continue to happen.

Laurie Holmes (Gisborne , 2023-06-07)

That the council revoked their decision to give the learn to swim programme to an overseas company over a local company for profit is absolutely wrong.

Susan Kingsbeer (Gisborne , 2023-06-07)

Comet Swimming Club has been vital to our district to ensure all the kids have the right skills to play in our own backyard (ocean)

Comet learn to swim was a huge part of my daughter’s childhood, from the age of 6mths. This gave her confidence in not just swimming but all areas in life. Water safety is so important in Gisborne and comet have endeavoured to create a safe environment for thousands of children which should be supported.

Michelle Elliott (Gisborne , 2023-06-07)

#2227

Niemin Huriwai (Gisborne, 2023-06-07)

#2231

Comet Swimming Club is a huge part of our culture. To cut them out and give the tender to an offshore group is appalling and the reasons for doing so are equally appalling.

Adrienne Simpson (Gisborne , 2023-06-07)

#2232

Im a furious COAST RATE PAYER.. GDC should have supported COMETS 60+ YEARS OF LOCAL LOYAL EXPERT DEVOTED SERVICE.. I am also a Kaiako KKM with 20+ years of engagement with Comet Club to provide free swimming lessons (i roto i te reo maori) to Coast mokopuna.

Heeney Gerry (Ruatoria, 2023-06-07)

We need to be supporting Local and Comet have been here for our communittee for years. They deserve to be here for the future.... I am disappointed to see they are not!!

Stacie Swanson (Gisborne, 2023-06-07)

#2242

It's typical of the council to funnel our money out of the area.
I remember the year they took contracts away from local companies & gave them to Auckland businesses. It was a fiasco that time.
I wonder if they ever have our best interests in their scope. Doesn't look like it to me.

Ingrid Derbyshire (Gisborne, 2023-06-07)

What GDC has done is wrong. Should not be awarded to Australian coy. Should go to local organisation. Shame on you GDC.

Vikki Haskins (Gisborne, 2023-06-08)

#2258

The contract for the Learn to Swim needs to be kept in local hands. The money for the pool was given by the Govt to create jobs and money in Gisborne and by giving the contract to an international company you are doing the opposite and taking jobs away from Gisborne people! My children have used Comet and they are a great team of instructors who offer an efficient and valuable service to our tamariki.

Georgina Kemp (Gisborne, 2023-06-08)

#2259

My three year son has been part of Comet Learn to Swim almost his whole life. His grandmother and great aunts were also part of the Comet family in the 1960s or thereabouts. We MUST stay local, why on earth would you give the contract to an Australian company? They don’t know our children, they don’t know our way of life here.

Jody Wintringham (Gisborne, 2023-06-08)

#2260

Comet has been training our children for many years, they are locals we know and trust. They have many years of experience that a few weeks of training the new employees of this international company cannot replace. Enough jobs are being lost without giving them to some foreign enterprise.

Gayle Douglas (Gisborne , 2023-06-08)

#2261

Comet provides an excellent training and service to the Gisborne community. Their staff are top people who have great relationships with their students and their families. This I saw first hand as a teacher at Elgin school for nine years and as a grand parent at learn to swim classes.
We need to support locals delivering proven quality programmes.

Bronwyn Coppin (Gisborne, 2023-06-08)

Samantha Harding (Gisborne , 2023-06-08)

#2272

I believe in Gisborne first and not last and also children need to learn to swim on the Coast.

Jeanette Lennane (Gisborne, 2023-06-08)

#2273

They started teaching Eruera when he started going to Kaiti school at 5 years of age. Every year after that in the first term of the school year they not only remembered him by name from their previous years lessons but they also new exactly where his level of water confidence was. He finally learned to swim and perform other water confident activities at 8 years of age. They also celebrated his accomplishments with him by giving him high fives and lots and lots of praise for his achievements. Those comet swimming tutors who had followed his progress from his very first day should be commended for not only taking a personal interest in Eruera's water confidence and progress, but that of every child they have taught to swim over many many years.

Eddie Stainton (Gisborne , 2023-06-08)

Suze Hayward (Gisborne, 2023-06-08)

#2283

I'm concerned that introducing another provider to such a small ecosystem will result in the Comet swim school being cannibalized -for instructors and for learner swimmers - and ultimately destroyed. This would be a huge loss to our community. Made extra hurtful by the fact that it need not have happened. I'm gutted that GDC processes have allowed this scenario to occur.

Carrie White (Gisborne, 2023-06-08)

Mathew Bannister (Gisborne, 2023-06-08)

#2298

Comet taught me to swim from the age of 1 and I swam with them into my teenage years. I’m disappointed to say the least with an overseas company taking over their space.

Georgia Williams (Gisborne, 2023-06-08)

#2299

I’m signing because this is wrong and I support of local champions!

Craig Green (Gisborne , 2023-06-08)

#2301

Comets have done amazing work over the years teaching all of our kōhanga mokopuna and they travel from as far away as Hicks Bay in the north down to Whatatutu and Muriwai in the south.

Mihi Tashkoff (Tolaga Bay, 2023-06-08)

#2302

I strongly object to this contract going to an overseas money making organisation. How much did cost the rate payers for a consultant no doubt from out of town for his input?. How much input from local iwi was there in relation to this decision. The City Council is clearly not here for the people and tamariki of Gisborne

Glenys Jenkins (Gisborne, 2023-06-08)

#2304

I support the comet club

Ana Nahi (Gisborne, 2023-06-08)

The Gisborne District Council have done wrong by local people in our community with this decision! Not acceptable!

Jane Nikora (Gisborne , 2023-06-08)

#2311

Comet is a local company with history and mana. Give them a chance to at least equal the better bid (term wise). Post-cyclone and our isolation means we need to support local.

Tanya Hohepa (Gisborne, 2023-06-08)

#2313

Comet has taught all my four children how to swim. They have learnt to be safe in the water which has made it more enjoyable for them. I support Comet 100%

Wiremu Kaa (Gisborne, 2023-06-08)

As a former Comet instructor and water safety enthusiast I'm appalled at the council decision to do this! It's not ok. Comet needs to stay!!

Shelley McIntosh (Auckland , 2023-06-08)

Lynn Thomas (Gisborne, 2023-06-08)

#2324

I am disappointed in GDC’s choice not to stand by a local company who have served the community for such a long time. My children have benefitted from the swimming lessons of Comet. I am also concerned about the impact this choice will have on the employees of Comet. Life is already difficult for those living in Gisborne for many locals, what will become of them?

Tiria Waitai (Gisborne, 2023-06-08)

#2325

I personally support the comet swimming club. I also highly think the GDC should support there local too!

Stewart Draffan (Gisborne, 2023-06-08)

#2326

Local matters! Comet swimming club have been supporting Gisborne’s children to learn to swim for years. I have never heard anything bad said about them.

Lyn Grimson (Gisborne, 2023-06-08)

#2329

The contract should remain with a local provider and not go off shore.
We been involved with this club for at least 30 years

Bridget Carpendale (Gisborne, 2023-06-08)

#2332

I just disagree for it to be handed to a international company.

Barbara August (Gisborne, 2023-06-08)

#2333

I BELIEVE THE COUNCIL SHOULD SUPPORT LOCAL AND BOTH SWIMMING CLUBS DO GIVE GISBORNE CHILDREN THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN TO SWIM. WERE COMET ASKED IF THEY GIVE FREE LESSONS OR COULD SUPPORT TE REO?

Jocelyn Gilby (Gisborne, 2023-06-08)

#2335

I support comet as I’m a kaiawhina at te kura kaupapa Maori o mangatuna and take the tamariki there for two years and they are awesome at what they do and the staff are friendly

Chase Matete (Tolaga bay, 2023-06-08)

#2336

This belongs to Tairawhiti not overseas people

Lauretta Winitana (Gisborne, 2023-06-08)

#2337

All four of my children were taught by Comet Swimming Club; competed for them and went on to patrol and compete for Midway Surf Club. Beth, Greg and Raewyn had the best interests of local children running through their veins: it wasn’t a job for them, it was the empowerment of the local young generation to receive and then give and continue to give back to the local community. This isn’t something that will be on offer from an international company.

Sally Willock (Alvington, 2023-06-08)

#2339

This should stay local

Steve Kibble (Gisborne , 2023-06-08)

#2342

It's a ridiculous decision

Macdonald Kelli (Gisborne, 2023-06-09)

#2343

It’s very important to have the local Gisborne swimming school active in the major pool for the area. They are supported by many local families. It doesn’t make sense to bring a new provider into the area.

Jane Boswell (Wellington , 2023-06-09)

#2344

I believe this should be kept local.

Vicki Tate (Gisborne, 2023-06-09)

#2346

Comet Swimming has been a huge part of my life as well as family, friends and students in my teaching profession. They’ve done an amazing job teaching and supporting people and their swimming capabilities. It is so sad that they have not been supported and missed out on this opportunity by the local council. Support local!

Michaela Boyle (Gisborne , 2023-06-09)

#2347

I had a business in Gisborne for 33 years.
Gisborne council must support local business, especially in this instance where they have done the job successfully for so long. Local people pay the rates that they are spending and it should be spent locally.

Michael Swanson (Gisborne, 2023-06-09)

#2349

I believe we should support local

Christine McGrath (Gisborne, 2023-06-09)

#2352

I’m signing because I support local tairawhiti to better family community and passed down knowledge of the sport for the future champs to experience before international companies to exploit keeps standards within the work already done unachievable and at high expectations

Daniel Campbell (Melbourne , 2023-06-09)

#2354

#2355

I support local business

Tiria Peneha (Gisborne , 2023-06-09)

#2358

We need to keep things local, also Comet has been around for a long time as stated in the article. Having an overseas company how do you know if they will be community orientated, you wouldn’t. Here is a company that’s been providing for Gisborne for years. It’s the same as Shop Local we should be Keeping Local within our businesses.

Kath Barbarich (Gisborne, 2023-06-09)

#2360

Let locals teach locals ,give back to our own community not off shore it's silly.

Marcia Downs (Gisborne, 2023-06-09)

#2361

I want to support Comet, a local business, that has given excellent service. They tick " all the same boxes" that Belgravia do. I believe Comet has been disadvantaged by the Tender process, for which, a larger company has more resources and staff .

Sarah Deighton (Gisborne , 2023-06-09)

#2362

My children and a lot of Ngati Porou / tairawhiti children have been priviledged enough to swim comet

Arthur Price (Gisborne, 2023-06-09)

It's disgusting that the GDC have chosen an international company over a local group that have been giving a great local service for 65 years.

Neil Coomber (Taupo, 2023-06-10)

#2393

Comet is part of Gisborne. They have been teaching/coaching swimming for years. A lot of the swimmers go on to compete for Comet and therefore Gisborne. My daughter and son were Comet members, and would not have gone to the Nationals without the club.
You're bringing in an international group, that will no doubt cost Gisborne people more, to learn to swim etc, when you have a club already set up to do this.

Sheryl Kirwan (Taupo, 2023-06-10)

#2394

The Gisborne District council is thinking about money and not the community and why try to fix something that is not broken when will they learn

John Moffat (Gisborne, 2023-06-10)

#2395

The council should be supporting local

Nicky Green (Gisborne, 2023-06-10)

#2398

I was a competitive swimmer in Gisborne for many years. I know first hand many accomplished swimmers to come from Comets learn to swim. The club has always employed the best people for the fit. Swimmers are there to learn to swim. If the want to learn Te Reo enroll in Te Reo classes.

Karen Griffiths (New Plymouth , 2023-06-10)

#2399

Comet always has the best interest of our whanau and community at heart. It is only right that they continue to be provided the funding that they need to deliver the amazing program they do.
