Support our local "Comet Swimming Club". Demand they review their decision to give our local "Learn to swim programme" to an International company.

This is beyond ridiculous...there needs to be questions asked about the process here.

H L (Gisborne, 2023-06-06)

#1803

This is unfair to the group that has been supporting our community for over 50 years. We should always support our local groups as city to show community unity.

Tash Johnson (Gisborne, 2023-06-06)

#1804

I am absolutely disgusted by this decision. The fact that it has been decided, and must have been approved by multiple council is beyond belief. A local council so blatantly not supporting local. It's just unbelievable. Some serious questions need to be asked - makes me wonder if it is all above board? Who has connections in the council to this other organisation ?

K Kitto (Gisborne , 2023-06-06)

#1805

Comet Swim club are a valuable part of our local community having taught mine and many other children water confidence and skills. It is disappointing to hear the new contract for teach to swim at Kiwa pool has been awarded to a company outside of the district.

Kelsey Williams (Gisborne , 2023-06-06)

#1806

I am disappointed that Comet are not the Club chosen to provide the Learn to Swim programme
here in Gisborne. Also for the fact it has gone to an off shore company instead. Please reconsider this as Comet have a vested interest in our community and always have had.

Helen Macdonald (Gisborne, 2023-06-06)

#1807

GDC need to support local

kirsty gaddum (gisbone, 2023-06-06)

#1808

I'm disappointed in the decision to hand the contract to a company out of this city let alone this country. With the recent cyclone disaster, comet rallied with the community to ensure lessons could continue and give our kids a sense of normality. Where was that same sense of community when the council made their decision? So much for 'support local' and helping our economy.

Ariana Peneha (Gisborne, 2023-06-06)

#1809

I support Comet Swimming Club. I also support a review of the GDC procurement policy to support local.

#1820

My 4 children have been part of this passionate swim club for over 9 years. I am devastated by this news for the club and our community, the smaller teachers such as Pat who will not be allowed to continue their incredible programmes with our Tamariki.
If the Australian company offered a better looking package, why not propose to comet to rose up and do the same?
Disappointing news and breaks our trust in who is looking after our town.

Sophie Macleod (Gisborne, 2023-06-06)

#1821

I believe the Learn to Swim contract should have stayed with Comet Swimmng

Geraldine Cornelius (Gisborne, 2023-06-06)

#1822

This decision is so outrageous and ridiculous the council must reconsider their stupidity and save face!! If the price between the two applying were ‘that close’, the local option should of been awarded. Comet caters for all, from lower socio- economic groups and all Kura’s💞

Jules Hansen (Gisborne, 2023-06-06)

#1825

The Comet club have served this community, providing jobs, teaching tamariki to swim and giving back to the community - sponsoring tamariki, supporting quiz nights and fundraising with prizes and they have locally been involved for a huge amount of years - they have provided the service for our school that I am DP at, as well as for our own children. This decision is so disappointing when we have an outstanding service already that is local, and isn’t that the message that is put out there - “support local”.

Amanda Owen (Gisborne, 2023-06-06)

#1826

Comet are amazing!!!!!!

#1832

I believe that The GDC need to review their recent decision so Comet Swimming Club can continue to serve the community they have served so well for over 65 years.

Mandi Bramwell (Gisborne, 2023-06-06)

#1833

My children attended Comet swim club as babies 21 years ago. The club have served Gisborne so well in delivering swimming lessons to our children who need them because we live in a Coastal town. Comet swim club absolutely deserve to continue to deliver quality swimming lessons for our future children in our newest community facility over an out of country company.

Wendy Worters (Gisborne, 2023-06-06)

#1836

keep it local. Less problems more results.
Comet has taught many Gisborne people to swim over the years without problems

Barrie Rykers (Gisborne, 2023-06-06)

If I hadn’t already said before. I believe we need to stay Locally owned. I got taught there. And so will my daughter in the near future. I say keep it locally owned

Anahera Wilson (Gisborne, 2023-06-06)

#1839

My children learned to swim with Comet 30 yers ago.
I support the review of the letting of the contract to an Australian company.
I totally support Comet being awarded the contract as long as they are competitive as it is indicated they are.

#1849

I disagree with awarding of swim contract to another outfit. Commet have done an outstanding job for many years and i fully support the kaupapa to reinstate them as LTS providers in Tairawhiti.

gregor ross (Gisborne, 2023-06-06)

#1850

I support the local Comet Swimming Club, I grew up/lived in Te Tairawhiti for over 17 years and I wholeheartedly believe that the local community should get a say in who runs the programme that teaches our tamariki to swim, Comet has done a great job in all the years they’ve been teaching our kids to swim and they are a local company who has the community in mind and can relate to the community, I don’t believe overseas contractors can, nor do I believe they will deliver on their promise of “full immersion te reo swimming lessons” because they are after all a multibillion dollar company and gisborne is a small place that they have so suddenly taken interest in? (from what we have seen) I fail to understand why.

Georgia Wanoa (Invercargill , 2023-06-06)

#1851

I support Comet, they are local and they have taught thousands of our Kaiti kids to swim

BJ Ayton (Gisborne, 2023-06-06)

Tim Petro (Gisborne, 2023-06-06)

#1857

I've been a comet "swim for life Tairawhiti" instructor for 4 years and it is my firm belief that this decision undermines the fundamental societal values our community it built upon.

Ario Rewi (Tikitiki, 2023-06-06)

#1858

Local knowledge is priceless! Successfully teaching our tamariki how to swim for 65years at our local beaches makes sense, why change that? Plus the funding will go back to the community and not to an international company.

Joe Oaul (Wairoa, 2023-06-06)

#1860

We should support a local club with a long local history. Not an international provider who will take profits out of our community. The publicised reasons for the decisions made don’t add up.

Duncan Cundall-Curry (Gisborne, 2023-06-06)

#1861

Gisborne is a community based city filled with dedicated people striving for the betterment of its people. The local people who live here do so to provide the best services and opportunities for its community. If they can’t they make it their commitment to do so. Electing to give something away to an outside interest rather than the local providers takes away all sense of community spirit. Comet Swim Club is part of our community and should not be ousted for the sake of dollars and services that they are committed to provide without question.

Pam Brown (Gisborne , 2023-06-06)

#1862

Because i support comet swimming.. they've been teaching our tamariki to swim for years how can use not give it to them?????? They are lovely swimming instructors ❤️ #COMETSWIMMING!!

#1864

I tautoko COMET!

Ropoama Hape (Gisborne, 2023-06-06)

#1865

I find it offensive that the council would give community putea to an organisation not only based outside of the community, but owned by a foreign entity. This is something that should be run by locals FOR locals. This is one of those things that is more important than penny pinching and outsourcing will never compare to the overall benefits gained by keeping this within the community.

Cheri Waitoa (East Coast, 2023-06-06)

I stand with Comet

Anita Wilson (Pahiatua, 2023-06-06)

#1903

Comet is a part of Gisborne and knows the community and the young people so well - you can’t buy that. Giving a contract to a company that knows nothing of the town and its people, of the schools and the students that they are working with - that’s shocking, and truthfully, incredibly short-sighted. Gisborne is in a position that they should be building on every good thing that the community has - that’s true community development. Gisborne Council - you should know this.

Kate Ney (Victoria, 2023-06-06)

#1907

They deserve to be the resident provider, they have more than earned the right!

Rebecca Trafford (Tolaga Bay, 2023-06-06)

I have known of the great work that Comet Swimming Club do in our community for years. My child has swimming classes with them twice a week, and to watch her improvement and the smile on her face after each session has been incredibly rewarding - all done with patience, care and passion.

Alessandra Kutzke (Gisborne, 2023-06-06)

#1916

I am appalled by the decision that the GDC has made to give an International company instead of choosing a local company who has helped many of us here in Tūranganui-a-Kiwa with swimming. I stand with Comet!!!

Mani Tuhaka (Gisborne, 2023-06-06)

#1917

This should have been a no brained and given to comet with no hesitation.

#1918

Debbie Henare (Gisborne, 2023-06-06)

As a rate payer I would expect the Council to support local 100%. After the climatic events and Gisborne’s somewhat isolated location, small local business struggle enough. Shame on you council for not supporting your own.

Steven Webb (Gisborne, 2023-06-06)

Elizabeth Kamana (Gisborne, 2023-06-06)

#1936

My 3 children went to comet swimming club, where most of their coaches gave up their time to coach for free . To keep their community safe.
Also provide a reasonable fee so it was accessible to all socio economic members of the community.
This is so wrong on so many levels.

Carol Stehlin (Gisborne, 2023-06-06)

#1942

Comet Swimming Club is a local club having served the local community for 60+ years. The Council have not provided one valid reason or point of difference as to why this contract should go to an overseas company rather than Comet.

Janet Joblin (Gisborne, 2023-06-06)

#1944

I believe the Comey Swimming Club is a Community and locally driven club, that has always supported and provided for our community, who live here, knows our community and belongs here and I would prefer to support local not some group we don't even know

Simon Pusch (Gisborne, 2023-06-06)

#1947

I think Comet has given outstanding service to this city's children over many years - they are proven and its important that we support local. I do not believe that an international organisation will deliver Te Reo well, they are just paying lip-service by saying they will deliver something the staff of the Council consider of prime importance at this time.

Leigh Fletcher (Gisborne, 2023-06-06)

Like stated, why live in Gisborne when our own council doesn't even support Gisborne. My son goes to comet swim classes and LOVES them!!! The kids, parents and I'm sure teachers were looking forward to being at the new pools. What a let down.

#1974

Comet Swim club has been a part of thousands of Gisborne families for years and years. So wrong to hand this to a international company. Comet is a icon of Gisborne you should be ashamed of yourselves Council for even thinking about taking this piece of Gissy and throwing it overseas!!!

Alberta Ahuriri (Gisborne, 2023-06-06)

#1977

Comet is the most deserving for the LTS contract. They have served the community for many years and taught so many such a needed life skill in Tairawhiti. As a past LTS instructor for Comet I know how tough it is working out of Elgin School for the club and the upkeep there is not easy but we did it to continue our service to the community.
I feel that the panels decision to give the contract to an outsider because their tender had more "feel good factors", and makes them feel good. But you just have to listen to the noise Tairawhiti community are making here that backs up how wrong the decision is.
Councillors are voted in by the Tairawhiti people, they represent us. But unfortunately the panel of 5 have not done the right thing here.

Louise Burrows (Gisborne, 2023-06-06)

#1978

I can't understand why this contract would ever go to an overseas company over a local business, who already run an excellent service and could easily be supported to upscale it if that was what was required
