SAVE THE MONTEZUMA CYPRESSES AT THE JAGOU PLANTATION

FORTY-SEVEN MONTEZUMA CYPRESSES WHICH ARE LOCATED WITHIN A PROPOSED PUBLIC PARK AREA IN SOUTHMOST, TEXAS, ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS ARE IN DANGER OF DYING FOR LACK OF WATER. THEY ARE SITUATED ALONG THE RESACA DE LA PALMA, WHICH IS UNDERGOING MAJOR INFRASTRUCTURE RE-DEVELOPMENT. TO THIS POINT IN TIME, APPROXIMATELY SIX YEARS HAVE PASSED WITH THE WATERWAY HAVING BEEN EVACUATED OF WATER. WITHIN THAT PERIOD TWELVE MAJESTIC CYPRESSES HAVE DIED AS A RESULT OF THIS CONDITION. OUR INTENT, BY THE FORMULATION OF THIS PETITION, IS TO BRING AN AWARENESS OF THIS TRAGEDY TO THE RESPONSIBLE OFFICIALS AND PRESS FOR AN EXPEDITED SCHEDULE WHEREBY CONSTRUCTION WORK MAY BE MORE RAPIDLY DRAWN TO A CLOSE, AND WATER READMITTED INTO THAT SYSTEM. PLEASE HEAR OUR PLIGHT.
