CLAG is dedicated to preserving the unique style and heritage of our city within its historic walls. The proposed development at the Amar’s Building includes:

An 8-story structure, towering over the majority of surrounding buildings, which are typically 3 to 5 stories high.

A design completely out of place with the traditional architecture of the area.

A high-rise development sets a precedent for more, risking the town center's historic character and inviting modern, oversized buildings within the city walls. High-rises are fine in appropriate areas, but not within the old walls. Help protect Gibraltar's heritage.

Gibraltar's town planning regulations aim to preserve the character and scale of the urban environment, particularly within the historic city walls. Building height restrictions are determined based on zoning regulations and the context of surrounding structures. In most areas within the town centre, developments must conform to the established heights of adjacent buildings, typically ranging from 3 to 5 stories, to maintain architectural harmony and avoid overshadowing or creating wind tunnels. The Development and Planning Commission (DPC) oversees applications and considers factors such as height, density, and the impact on heritage sites. Public participation is an integral part of the process, allowing residents to express concerns or objections about proposed developments. This is particularly important for projects like tall buildings, which could significantly alter the town's historic appearance and ambiance.
