Petition for the MRC of Haut St-Laurent to collect and recycle styrofoam #6

styrofoam3.jpgThe recycling company in the MRC Haut-Saint-Laurent does NOT accept styrofoam.

However, as citizens, we have the power to stop styrofoam number 6 from ending up in the garbage, where it leaches toxins into the soil, water and air.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has just reclassified styrene from being a “possible carcinogen” to a “probable carcinogen.”https://uspirg.org/news/usp/world-health-organization-finds-increased-cancer-risk-chemical-found-plastics#

Exposure to styrene can cause irritation of the skin, eyes, the upper respiratory tract, and the gastrointestinal tract. Chronic exposure results in more severe effects including depression, headaches, fatigue, weakness, hearing loss, and disrupted kidney function.

We propose that the region set up collection depots which can then transport the Styrofoam #6 to Pyrowave in Valleyfield.  Pyrowave accepts  #6 styrofoam. It is liquified on location and sold to make more styrofoam or to be used in tires.

We have a chance to keep toxic styrofoam out of landfill sites and to support a local business at the same time.  Win Win!
