Bring Back No Nit Policies to Schools

Head lice have become epidemic in the past decade since school boards took away the no nit policies that used to be in place to protect the spread of head lice in the classroom.

I am making an effort to persuade policy-makers to bring back the policy or some form of it to stop children with active bugs in the hair from attending the classroom. Please sign the petition in the link below to support this effort.

With the mutation of super lice which have become immune to OTC drug store over the counter treatments. Parents are now struggling more than ever to deal with getting rid of head lice. This struggle is amplified when they finally get rid of them only to be re infested when sending their child back to school where other children still have active head lice.

The school boards rationale for removing the policy was that it was exclusionary and was affecting children's education. Further they cited head lice was not a health or medical condition but rather a nuisance.

Head lice is a highly communicable affliction. The second highest next to the common cold in children. These blood sucking insects travel from person to person and cause a great deal of mental and financial stress for both parents and children. Children with undiagnosed and untreated head lice can rapidly spread it to others and we have seen infections such as impetigo as a result of severe cases. Allowing children with active head lice to attend class especially with highly resistant strains of head lice needs to be reconsidered if not stopped all together. We are expected to keep our children home with other communicable afflictions like colds and the flue. It makes common sense to do the same thing with children who have active head lice.

We must consider going back to a No Nit Policy or some form of policy to reduce the number of children and families getting lice and spreading lice. Please sign this petition so I can advocate for change and lobby the minister of education to take another look at why this policy was removed and what we need to do to bring something back that is fair and equitable for parents, children and educators.

As the owner of a head lice removal business, I see the frustration daily. This No Nit Policy ban has been great for those in the head lice removal business but as a parent it makes no common sense. I believe it was a mistake to stop checking and excluding students until they have been cleared of active head lice.

Bringing back a No Nit Policy or No Lice Policy will protect parents and students from the frustration, expense, and time it takes to deal with a head lice outbreak.

Please share this link with family and friends to spread the word and not the lice. Have a lice free school year.
