Thank you to everyone who has signed up for the petition. There are 27 signatures so far. I was hoping for more but we only need 20 signatures to petition council. The plan is to petition the next meeting in early february. If possible could you spread the word. A few more signatures would be good, but the main thing is the quality of the message that we send to council. If they were prepared to do their job properly we could have 3% rates increases for the next 8 years without lowering the level of service. Our rates are at least double or even triple what they should be or could be.

For 2025-26 the rates increase in the Long Term Plan is 12.5%. The councillors have approved spending like drunken sailors, and at the same time have set a target rates increase of 10%. They will go out to consultation on a 10% rates increase. You can't spend like drunken sailors AND have lower rates. From the numbers a 20% rates increase is required to balance the budget. I have heard the figure of 18.5% mentioned but I think that it will have to be higher.

So the cunning plan is to consult on 10% and then suddenly discover on the day that it needs to be 20%. Surprise. We had no idea. The commissioners used the same trick.
