Eradicate Food Adulteration in India
Hi All, we are Saaransh Parikh and Rishaan Malakar. We study in Grade 5 of Pathways School Gurgaon.
Food adulteration is the process in which the quality of food is lowered either by the addition of inferior quality material or by extraction of valuable ingredient.
. The huge increase in the detection of cases of food adulteration across India - from 15% in 2012-13 to 28% in 2018-19 as per the FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) is a sign of worry and serious concern. In current times food adulteration poses serious health risks to many in India. Consumption of adulterated food can cause not only food poisoning, vomiting and nausea but also dangerous medical conditions such as heart problems, liver damage, gastrointestinal disorders as well as cancer.
The government of India passed the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. It has also established the FSSAI as a single reference point for all matters related to food safety and standards in India. However, there are several gaps in the enforcement of the Food Safety and Standards Act at the ground level. The FSSAI needs to undertake aggressive campaigning to ensure that people become aware of the menace of food adulteration and its harmful effects on their health. Central and State governments need to employ more trained staff in the food safety sector. The government needs to carry out more surveillance sampling to detect cases of food adulteration and impose severe penalties on those who engage in adulteration of food items.
