#1085

Mainstream commercialism is destroying arts and crafts. Authorities deny local venues and artists a platform for growth and exposure yet happily allow international artists to fill the radio waves in our venues. How will South African musicians ever perform on the world stage when they are denied permission to even perform at the local pub? Arts and culture are suppressed in the name of capitalism. This sounds like an extortion tragic to me.

#1151

Pretoria has always been a hub for local musicians to perform and their space to do it has become almost non existent. Sowaar bar has helped rejuvenate the industry, especially after the hard times of covid. We need to keep this society alive, keep a space for artists to thrive, and a safe space for this to happen.

#1163

Sowaar bar is a place where I go out with my friends to listen to live music and just enjoy our evening. This is my "get away" place. If things get too much I invite my friends along and we go enjoy our evening. I've never had a problem with their music, it's very nice for me to just take a break and sit at Sowaar bar and enjoy myself.

Please dont close the bar

Jane Botha (Pretoria, 2023-09-03)

Sowaar bar is a corner stone of the live music scene and I’m tired of fat cats stepping on the guy that wants to make a difference. We all complain about our country but instead of being part of the problem, become part of the solution.

Sowaar bar are currently one of a few independent venues who are enabling musicians to earn an income through the performance of live music. This venue provides a professional platform for musical innovation and encourage others to support the arts.

By prohibiting this venue from hosting live performances, the consequences does not only have a negative impact on financial loss of income resulting in unemployment, but it prevents the local music industry to grow and flourish.

Live musical performances connects us as a society. Connection is the doorway for compassion, joy, hope, and healing. To create meaningful art and share it with an audience is a luxury many of us have lost due to the closure of a variety of venues during and after the Covid pandemic.

The music industry are in desperate need of independent performing venues in Pretoria. Through preventing instead of enabling venues to provide platforms for artists to tell their stories are not in the best interest of the music industry or Pretoria.

I had the privilege to be part of an innovative musical and poetry performance conceptualized by Wêreld Records at Sowaar bar, which had a profound effect on my music, career and soul. I do hope that we will not lose another venue who have supported the arts.
