It is time that our profession is recognised. We do not get rural allowance though we are the ones doing home visits in deep rural areas where as other professionals receive by merely being employed. It is a shame that we are taken for granted. Our salaries are an embarrassment we earn peanuts but yet the workload increases on a daily basis. Mr President please hear our plea as it has been falling on deaf ears for too long.

#826

Social work is a very important profession particularly in South Africa where our country still wrestles with the ills of inequality and marginalization. It aims to address the needs of the poor and most vulnerable members of our society and therefore it is high time that our government prioritizes this profession like other professionals and create employment opportunities for the unemployed graduates.

(East London, 2018-03-03)

#827

We need to respect and value those of us who have committed our lives in the interest of serving and helping others. We have university degrees that should be met with the relevant recognition as in other professions. We are losing active working social workers at a rapid rate, due to multiple challenges they are facing, including challenges of lack of employment opportunities as well as poor working conditions. We urge you to please address this issue, in the interest of our country and the vulnerable populations that we serve on a daily basis.

(Benoni, 2018-03-03)

I am affected by the unemployment crisis in the country & ignorance of the government towards my profession, i have been applying for vacancies since 2015 and marginalized by The department of social development because I was funded by nsfas, the other governmental departments advertise minimal vacancies and hire through nepotism, the NGO's aswell always have financial issues and can't afford to hire social workers n pay them a decent salary, everywhere I knock the door is closed, the previous minister of social development was very arrogant and didn't intend to address our concerns , i am a hopeless graduate, laughing stock in the community, helpless within my family, i am an adult who has to secum to certain responsibilities yet I cannot because without a job I am powerless, i studied hard and won't resort to Working as a slave and exploited all my life, my hard earned degree was and should be my way out of poverty, I am also driven to help meet the needs of other service users , i want to be a change agent but this government is letting me down

(Nelspruit, 2018-03-03)

#930

I'm signing because social worker is not considered as a demanding profession, teachers get paid, nurses get paid but social workers survive on peanuts, NGOs are worse they could offer a qualified Social worker a salary as little as 3000 Rand, we deal with abuse, counseling, court cases, substance abuse, crisis intervention, we experience all the traumatic events however at the end of the day it's hard for social worker to build a 3 room house ezilalini in Eastern Cape because of peanuts and with the degree that many are looking down at. Mr President you are our last hope, please include social workers in your speech as well, even our families see it as a no value profession, we loosing the passion of helping others, where have you heard that one social should attend to 250 clients in a month, do you think sir we can be effective in our work? and psychological we will become clients ourselves. Please let everyone who is qualified be employed and earning a decent salary. Thuma thina (social workers) tata senze sibenegalelo kumzansi africa wethu. Thank you sir.

I have been a Social Worker for 38 years. For 38 year I gave it my all, keeping nothing back and often neglecting my family and my own health in order to serve! I feel extremely demoralized as it seem as if there is no way forward for us....our salaries is of such a nature that we a ourselves often forced to become victims of domestic violance and abuse ourselves as we have to depend on abusive spouses for financial support; no career pathing or personal developement or promotion opportunities; lack off condusive working environment often putting our own lives at risk; we are often treated like "third grade professionals" by other professional counterparts. How can we serve others whole heartedly if we feel abused and neglected ourselfs. PLEASE PLEASE hear our cries!!!!
