New Zealand’s public transport system should provide a basic sense of security for everyone living in New Zealand, not fear. There is a lot the government can do to prevent such incidents from happening again. I hope the government will take action, rather than allowing offenders to go unpunished time and again, causing the public to lose confidence in their basic safety

Racism behaviour is intolerable in any country not to mention this super diverse city like Auckland. Physical attacks with or without reason must be penalised by law.

I am shocked by what happened! How could such a thing happen in Auckland! How could the driver be so cold-blooded and unprofessional! How could the criminals be so rampant! I strongly support this petition! Enact laws to severely punish criminals and drivers who fail to do their job.

I’m signing because this is a racist crime more than a regular attack incident. I don’t know why the victim never mentioned “racism” in this English version story, but as I know on Chinese social media (many of the witnesses are Chinese), this Māori crazy woman was yelling:” You chink go back to China.” I don’t know if there’s anyone who threatened the victim to ask him to neglect the racism fact.
Our Chinese community contributes more than others, yet has been treated like this. And it’s so sad that New Zealand is becoming a racist country. And I hope our police officers can do some real work.

My Signature Is Because I Believe:
This incident is shocking and regrettable, revealing many inadequacies in the public transportation system's response to sudden violent incidents. Here are my views on this matter:

Public Transportation Safety Issues
Insufficient Safety Measures for Passengers:

Public transportation should be a safe means of travel, but this incident shows a lack of necessary training and emergency measures by the driver and transportation management in responding to sudden violent incidents.
The driver failed to take effective action to protect passengers during the incident and even chose to open the door allowing the perpetrator to escape, despite the victim clearly needing help. This is extremely irresponsible.
Management of Carrying Dangerous Items:

The perpetrator in this incident was able to bring a clearly dangerous metal rod onto the bus, reflecting loopholes in the current inspection and monitoring mechanisms. Strengthening the inspection of passengers' items, especially restricting obviously dangerous items, is a crucial step in ensuring the safety of public transportation.
Impact on the Victim
Physical and Psychological Trauma:

The victim suffered not only severe physical injuries but also deep psychological trauma. This experience may have long-term effects on his daily life and mental health.
The neglect of the public transportation system and the driver's indifferent attitude have aggravated the victim's suffering, which is heartbreaking.
Loss of Trust in Public Transportation:

Such violent incidents and the driver's inaction could lead to a significant loss of trust in the public transportation system by the victim and other passengers.
As a student, the victim needs to take the bus to school every day. This fear and anxiety can have lasting negative impacts on his studies and life.
Improvement Measures
Enhancing Driver Training:

Drivers should receive comprehensive training, including how to identify potential dangers, respond to sudden incidents, and protect passengers in times of crisis.
The training should also include knowledge of how to preserve the scene and report to the police, ensuring that drivers can respond correctly in emergencies.
Establishing and Enforcing Strict Safety Regulations:

The government and transportation management should formulate and strictly enforce relevant regulations, prohibiting the carrying of dangerous items onto public transportation.
Surveillance equipment should be installed on transportation vehicles to monitor the situation in real time, so timely actions can be taken in emergencies.
Strengthening Public Safety Awareness:

Through publicity and education, increase public safety awareness and self-protection abilities, reducing the occurrence of similar incidents.
Overall, this incident exposes serious problems within the public transportation system that require urgent attention from relevant departments. By enhancing driver training, improving safety regulations, and raising public safety awareness, we can ensure passenger safety when using public transportation and prevent similar tragedies from happening again.
