Call to suspend the Copyright Act Amendment Bill and the Performer's Protection Amendment Bill

Dear Mr President and the Select Committee

The amendment of the copyright act is not in line with the proposed changes that had to be made. It sounded promising that inclusion of copyright in the digital product, actors’ royalties, etc. would be benefactory but the Act as it is proposed now is detrimental for each creative in this country.

As an educational publisher, I would like to implement the proposed 4th Industrial Revolution in educational media. I however cannot do it as I cannot offer authors that their hours of work will pay off. I cannot guarantee bread on the table.

My partner is a movie-maker. He creates original content. When he loses the right to own his own content and cannot provide bread on the table, both of us are unemployed and part of the unemployed sector.

We have both dedicated our lives to create content. We have collaborated by way of others’ talents and our own to create content. We want to continue to collaborate in this country but when this Act is law, many of us will leave the country to survive.

To avoid any unintended repercussions of the bill that will affect investment.

(Jhb, 2019-02-27)

I'm signing because I watched the parliamentary hearings on the Copyright Bill and was singularly unimpressed with the quality of the chairperson and panel who were given the task of examining the content of the bill. Please re-visit the bill with people who have a better understanding of copyright and the creative industries.

(Centurion, 2019-02-27)

The new Copyright amendment bill will hamper creativity and impoverish creatives. It is also biased against creatives in favour of big corporations who don't even create content. The Bill must seek to empower the creatives who mostly have already been disadvantaged the plight of Apartheid.

...as usual, government has its head up its collective arse. And as a creative musician this Bill spits in my face.

(Johannesburg, 2019-02-28)

#615

We must protect our work and livelihoods. South Africa must move forward into line with commwealth standards and standards the will ensure a continued local arts industry.

(Johannesburg, 2019-02-28)

#616

The Bill, as it currently stands, does not have the best interests of all involved where copyright is concerned. We need a bill that protects content creators in all sectors of the creative/entertainment industry.

(Johannesburg, 2019-02-28)

#617

This affects all us creatives and we need to stand together to stop us being ripped off again and again.

(Durban, 2019-02-28)

#625

The current draft isn’t the correct way moving forward for musicians.

(Durban, 2019-03-02)

#626

Artists and the like will be prejudiced by this amendment. There is hardly any reasonableness in this Bill and the intentions around it cannot possibly be made in good faith.

(Sasolburg, 2019-03-02)

#629

It’s disastrous.

(Pretoria, 2019-03-02)

#633

I am an upcoming musician and thus I am directly going to be affected by this.

(Boksburg, 2019-03-02)

#636

As a songwriter no one has power of copyright of my work but me.
This is ridiculous.

(Johannesburg, 2019-03-02)

#643

I'm signing because these bills affect the artist and record companies freedom of choice and freedom to contract.

(Johannesburg, 2019-03-03)

#649

It’s essential that the rights of composers, authors, creatives and performers are protected at all costs. It is unacceptable that big corporations and business benefit at the expense of the intellectual property of creatives. In order for the industry to continue to grow and prosper it is essential that “goose that lays the golden egg” is protected otherwise the “eggs” will cease to be created and the industry will collapse.

(Johnannesburg, 2019-03-03)

#650

I support and endorse this petition to the extent that copyright experts be engaged, in order to resolve our current concerns with regards to the proposed copyright amendment bill.

(Johannesburg, 2019-03-03)

#652

This affects all of us musicians and we need to stand together to us being ripped off.

(Durban, 2019-03-04)

#653

Im a creative and also a corporate in the fraternity , i understand the implications !!!!

(Johannesburg, 2019-03-04)

#654

I am signing this petition because I have serious reservations with this Bill. My reservations include the potential negative economic impact and related job losses, undermining our local publishing sector, eroding our Intellectual property and leading to the re-colonisation of education in our country. We need to protect our own and not hand our Intellectual property to "global capital"!

(Cape Town, 2019-03-04)

#663

Out of great concernfor the copyright and intellectual property of the individual. Also for the protection of the rights of fellow South Africans who will be disposessed by the international community

DEMOCRATIC SUICIDE! - I REJECT IT! - IT IS MORALLY WRONG!
Through the ages we have learned through writings. The biggest breakthrough of humankind - second only to language. Writing has always imparted knowledge and communication.
Nazis burned books on "Kristallnacht" - is this where our country is heading? - are authors to be burned out of existence?!

This will result in authors seeking alternative means of survival (income). How will this country then be able to educate the youth? Corruption must be eradicated - not authors! Homegrown books are imperative with homegrown (local) knowledge, or does the government want us to become "intellectually colonised"? What will future generations have to say about that?

RE-COLONISATION OF SOUTH AFRICA!!

SHAME ON YOU!

I feel strongly that intellectual property should be protected by law.

(Strand, 2019-03-05)

#685

I'm signing because I would like you to suspend this bill in order to redraft it and subject it to a proper Non-Corrupt impact assessment process.

(Cape Town, 2019-03-05)

#699

It's not only a right, but a necessity.

(Mafikeng, 2019-03-05)

#702

This act needs A LOT MORE consideration, review and input from stakeholders.

(Pretoria, 2019-03-05)

#703

I'm signing because this will save Artists from being exploited over their hard work and also have terrible implications on their intellectual property.

(Johannesburg, 2019-03-05)

#707

We need to change the creative industry

(Jhb, 2019-03-05)

#708

I’m an artist and I want my rights protected

(Johannesburg, 2019-03-05)

#710

This affects me as a South African composer. Hasn’t the government destroyed this country enough?

(Montreux, 2019-03-05)

#711

I'm signing here because I can attest to how this Bill is going to negatively impact the lives of composers/authors of music

(Johannesburg, 2019-03-05)

#712

Some of the currently proposed amendments compromise the protection of Creators' Rights, they empower & give rights of exploitation to the 'User' at the expense and possible litigation costs to the Creator. These proposed changes have not be well thought out, a task that should be done by Professionals who fully understand the complicated space of Copyright Law.

(Johannesburg, 2019-03-05)

#719

I oppose this legislation. I do not give consent to stand under it or in any way to comply with it.

(Parys, 2019-03-06)

#721

No one should be allowed to copy books that's been published as the authors have spent many hours dedicating their time and resources into their material. What will happen to all the staff at publishing companies, printing companies and the economy?

(Cape Town, 2019-03-06)

#727

It's not anyone's right to take away control over rights to anyone's artistic and creative work, I believe covered and protected by International law but will find out

(Benoni, 2019-03-08)

#731

I'm a composer protecting my rights

(Johannesburg, 2019-03-09)

#740

I am concerned as a South African creative active in music production,Songwriting and performance that we as creatives were not properly contacted so we could have a say on this Bill as it directly affects us.

Proper consultation should be done before it goes to to President for signing.

Sincerely
AT Sikhosana
