This amount will put me in an position that I can not afford electricity, as it's already high and the impact of the additional tariff increase as a whole becomes unaffordable for a normal person with low incomeJan Fritz (Florida, 2024-07-05)

I’m signing because I am not happy about this service fee. Already I am buying my electricity via a middleman I knew nothing about and the middleman is charging their fee every time I buy electricity . I always get less units because of this middleman. So you can’t just charge me another R200 on top of what I’m paying really. R300 gives me 8.7 units now, what’s this? Are we becoming like Zimbabwe now?Mmathabo Malope (Johannesburg, 2024-07-05)

This Nqobani guy says prepaid customers have never contributed this R200 for infrastructure maintenance and development. How much have non-paying residents been contributing of this R200?The total number of people not paying this surcharge are non-paying residents.
They can't collect this from the non-payers NOW they're usurping this additional charge from prepaid customers who are always paying their portion but barely receive any service anyway.
Plus when prepaid meters were introduced, it is not on us that they did not factor this surcharge into the cost of electricity from the onset. Now they're playing catchup at our detrimental expense. Those council members who approved this nonsense know very well that the majority of this charge will not be coming from Soweto and all the squatter camps, this is utter rubbish.

Enough is Enough!! R200 every month is ridiculous, and lumped in with this high increase is insanity. Municipality needs to be accountable for its own mess. They also need to cean up the overcrowding in the inner city and there will be less illegal connections.Anonymous Anonymous (Johannesburg, 2024-07-05)

I don't know where people expect money to come from nor do they know ones affordably and the fact that it's just a select group is unfair we pay tax on everything then still prices still go up some of us can not even afford bread in our homes cause you pay bills and that's the end basic needs guys not even a lifestyle as the middle class we sick of carrying the country on our backs we to rich to be poor yet to poor to be richZenobia Isaacs (Johannesburg, 2024-07-05)
#5872
This extra charge does not take into account the dire economic strain that consumers are in. To be fair, this must be a once off charge per annum to be acceptable or the City must find another way to recover the amount. One of the ways they recover this amount I'd from the illegal connections and free electricity they provide to informal settlements.Bheki Makhubo (Johannesburg, 2024-07-05)
#5875
I believe this is an injustice and a rip off to citizens who are already not enjoying service delivery benefits from the municipality amidst the tariffs increase and loadshedding we are duly expected to pay more money we already don’t have in this tight economy!!Kagiso M (Roodepoort, 2024-07-05)

I think the Tariff increases every year are unacceptable. We are paying +/- R5000.00 every month for Water and Electricity but don't use any heaters, wash dishes once a day don't waste water etc but the amount still stays the same . We are struggling to pay this amount every month and have to get help from friends to make up the monthly payment and it's not always possible for them to help us then we have to worry about disconnection of services. We only have one small salary coming into the house. Is there no way that consumers earning below average wages can apply for rebates on municipal services to help struggling citizens keep their lights on?Natalie Weaver (Roodepooer, 2024-07-05)

City of jhb and city power are exploiting and abusing their mandate..The R200 surcharge is an oppressive tax. To add insult to injury, we are charged VAT over and above the oppressive tax.

Its unfair for the people paying for electricity and be charged so much, where as there people who don't even bother to pay /buy electric.Nozuko Notuku (Roodepoort, 2024-07-05)

The R200 + VAT fee that is charged is unfair towards pre-paid electricity consumers. The fee should be pro-rata based on actual consumption from the grid. Also, stop all illegal connections and power supply to those that do not pay their bills.
