Proposed development will diminish green space. Existing sports club with restaurant nearby - Discovery development.Patricia Seumenicht (Johannesburg, 2023-03-16)

Since I was a little boy I’ve been able to go to Field and Study with my family. It’s always been a staple Sunday afternoon play in the park with my little brother and dog. It’s a place that holds very special memories in my heart; memories with my late grandfather and dog who passed away two years ago, and through this development over our beloved park, it strips the space of its prominence in our hearts. I’m an economist and businessman and understand the importance of developmental infrastructure, however, why develop over a place that holds memories for so many?Connor Woods (Johannesburg, 2023-03-16)

I don't believe that a commercial solution is necessary for a successful adoption of the Field & Study Park (the Park), especially one that will see so much of the Park's green space sacrificed for paved pathways, padel courts, aquaponics, and related infrastructure. In addition, very little (if any) consideration has been given to the noise and lighting pollution that will, without a doubt, impact the animal life found in the Park and its surrounding homes.
The current proposal suggests that the Park is "broken". This is definitively not the case. A park's usefulness to a community and value within an ecosystem is not determined by the availability of built-up infrastructure and/or commercial products and services. To imply the Park is "broken" because its “dangerous” or “unsafe”, the paths aren't paved, braai areas are lacking, the rabbit and invasive plant species are a problem, etc., is simply using fearmongering as a marketing tactic.
Certainly, the Park could be safer, but so could our streets and any public area in South Africa. To suggest that one needs a ‘world class’ sporting venue to create a safe environment for people to enjoy is ludicrous.
I agree that solution must be found for the informal settlement, but it should be a solution that works with its inhabitants to create a community in which we’re all welcome. The residents of the Park’s surrounding suburbs don’t have a preferential right to the Park simply because their life circumstances allowed them the luxury of a bring-and-mortar home.
From a commercial perspective, the current proposal is lacking in so much depth and transparency, it’s impossible to assess whether its ability to support the Park in any meaningful way is anything more than the home and a prayer. At the very least the promoters should underwriting the financial, security, and other benefits promised by them.

This park is a green lung in our city. It has open spaces that support a diversity of wildlife and human use. The proposal will destroy this ecosystem, and create traffic, noise and human usage that the area is ill suited for. We have had genets and goshawks in our area (we live close by). Mountain cyclists, walkers and trail runners use the area for recreation. Horse riding is available in wide open spaces. The community centre - probably a heritage building - is used for a variety of community activities and courses. This wildlife and gentle human usage will be displaced by noisy Padel courts until late, instrusive road infrastructure, additional paved areas (including for parking), exclusive restaurants and a strong profit motive. I would strongly encourage a more community driven approach to the development of the park.Celia Haupt (Johannesburg, 2023-03-19)

I lived in Parkmore for over 20 years and enjoyed the freedom and space of the Field and Study and feel that it should not be changed without the proper processes being undertaken. The space is important to the community.Anton Bleekers (Parkmore, 2023-03-21)

The Field and Study Park is one of the few green spaces left in Johannesburg that allows younto escape the hustle and bussle of city life without having to travel far. It is a safe environment. The development is so large that you will end up taking away too much of the area avaialble for other nature events. The patrons attending the FieldMarket that require parking will start to move into the neighbourhood and encrouch on their space. Similarly with the parties and events held at the house. And if there is a proposal to park on the field. Where are the families going to play cricket with cars parked all over. This is def not a well thought out development - it is clear that there will have to be a minimum number of paddle courts to justify the investment - which means it has to make money - it is not about a community project with the wellbeing of the neighbourhood or the environment in mind. If you have an itch put up squash quarts or two paddle courts only. Though I cannot see where any of these developments won’t cause problems. The lights at Pirates are on till late and it doesn’t bother the enighbours because it is not built on top of the houses and it was an existing dedicated tennis and lawn bowls area. It was an enhancement. This Field and Study project is not an enhancement of a natural space.Colette Jeppe (Johannesburg, 2023-03-22)

I object to any development at Field & study park as it one of the last few remaining green areas in Sandton. There is no need for any of the proposed developments in this park as there are already plenty of these facilities that already exist in the area. Any development would upset the ecosystem of the park and diminish the habitat of the existing animals and birds living there.Kathleen Duggan (johannesburg, 2023-03-23)

I am against the changes proposed. Our cities need undisturbed, natural spaces where man has not destroyed them. ANY form of construction causes destruction and disruption to the natural environment, no matter how many regulations or rules they promise to adhere to. To add more concrete and buildings to our park will be very sad and bad for the animals, birds and natural plants in the area.

My father was mayor of Sandton and on the management committee of Sandton for many years and he was the person who was instrumental in getting the artist Ernest Ullman to donate this ground to SandtonMy father was very environmentally aware, even all those years ago(in 1970's) and really wanted this area to be a green space for Sandton (and other) residents.

I am very against the development. It will destoy the natural habitat of many birds and other spicies. Can my dogs play padel? And if I understood it correctly, the development is not solving the problem with the illigal settlement, and is just annexing the part of the park, that has no settlement on it, playing on the residences' fear, that they may expand into it one days. The village problems will not go away, the fires, music, living noises will still be there. The development is done for the profit, with questionable benefits to the community. And loss of the park
