Assoc. Prof., University of Lille, France
I am fully supporting the efforts to save this important academic institution.

The loss of of the Norwegian Institute would be a loss for the whole scholarship of classics and archaeology!

I'm signing because especially the schools of smaller countries, such as the Norwegian Institute at Athens, have played a significant role in keeping our cultural European heritage in the Mediterranean distinctly alive. With comparably little money the Norwegian Institute has achieved much!

For general and obvious reasons, apart from the fact that I have been a visitor qua participant in an important conference held at the institute.

Stop this cultural barbarism. It costs so little, and it means so much.

It will be a terrible loss if one decides to shut down the Norwegian Institute at Athens, which, as I surmise, has the special mission to explore the very cultural roots of Western Europe (i.e., ancient Greek civilization at large). To destruct can be done in a day, but it would take years to construct again such an institute, especially when the institute is internationally recognized. The fact that it is so recognized is demonstrated by the very fact of the nationality of the signer.

International academies and schools for classical studies represent a fundamental pillar of classicists work around the world. Losing them is virtually witnessing the disappearance of human interests for the study of its classical past.

(Bilbao, 2018-11-13)

#3072

I am signing because I value the contribution to scholarship that is made by each and every scholarly institute in Athens. Without the Norwegian Institute every other Institute in Athens would be poorer.

(Canberra, 2018-11-13)

It is increasingly vital that the Norwegian Institute at Athens retain its funding from the patron universities (and indeed find wider funding sources). As a Classics professor at Luther College, a US university created by Norwegian immigrants, this matter is even more dear to me. Greece, both ancient and modern, is a crucial point of contact for a greater understanding of the world we find ourselves in.

The work of the Institute in preserving and understanding our common European heritage needs to continue. This task must be shared by all European governments equally. If oil-rich Norway cannot spare funds for such endeavours, how can we expect other governments around the world to preserve our common human heritage?

Jeg signerer som en Norsk student av antikkens kultur i Storbritannia, som mener at det Norske institutet i Aten er en meget viktig ressurs for studier av antikken.

The Norwegian Institute at Athens has been producing excellent research for years. It would be catastrophically short-sighed, for Norwegian and European humanities, to reduce its operations.

The Norwegian Institute at Athens is vital.

I am professional archeologist and academic. This institute supports key work.

It is important and essential to support research and dissemination of our European cultural heritage in Greece.

(Graz, 2018-11-13)

Classics need the contribution of different nations with their special aspects. Its a shame that a rich country as Norway is has not the money to support the successful research work of its scholars.

(München, 2018-11-13)

The foreign institutes in Athens are not simply a relic of colonialism but play an important part in providing scholars working in Greece with facilities including contact with one another and access to the Greek authorities when needed.

(Durham, 2018-11-13)

#3107

I´m signing because I think that the Norwegian Institute at Athens has done a hard work and has contributed to improve the knowledge of Ancient Greece and, especially, of Ancient Arkadia

This is a vital scholarly resource that must be maintained. It is embarrassing that the universities of an outward-looking and progressive country such as Norway would consider this short-sighted action.

(Minneapolis, 2018-11-13)

I'm signing because I am a member of the British Schoo of Athens and know how important are these centres of specialist learning in one of the most important historical locations on this planet. The impact of loss of the Institute will be felt by scholars for a great deal longer than the short term funding challenges of the current patron institutions.

I'm signing as the Norwegian Institute is of international importance in the preservation of world cultural heritage. The Institute invited me a few years ago to talk on Palmyra, and even my current career is a different result of the Institute's generosity and inspirational professors at Bergen University whose faith in me lead me to the path I am currently on, teaching in one of America's most prestigious Ivy league Universities. I would not be half the person I am without having had this intellectual opportunity. May the Institute remain forever a beacon of light and inspiration for present, and future scholars.

The Norwegian Institute has carried out important research in Greece and ranks among the leading institutions doing research on Arcadia, on early Greek sanctuaries and in survey archaeology.

It would be a disaster for the international scholarly community in Athens if Norway were to withdraw its presence. Alongside its neighbours, Norway has contributed a huge amount to Greek archaeology, and it is a tragic waste for this wonderful tradition to be squandered.

As a Professor Emerita of Architecture and History of Architecture, I have witnessed the significance of establishing cultural contacts, research, and study of our mutual history. I strongly believe this Institution should be kept alive to maintain our connection with our past and future.

We must continue to study the past in order to understand ourselves better. We may not always get to see the full ramifications of our studies, but future generations will benefit from our work. Please keep supporting this vital institution.
