Renewable energy is important but in the right location. Near to Barnsdale Gardens is surely not the right place. Fond memories of meeting Geoff there many years ago. Can only guess what he would make of all this. Good luck Nick. We are all with you and your family.Jill Savage (Nottingham, 2024-04-17)

It will spoil a wonderful attraction to Rutland.Barnsdale is an historical gardening site which offers education about plants, soil and wildlife.
As well as being a peaceful place to visit and to just enjoy the surroundings.

There are better places to put these panels, does not make sense to destroy this family business and it's legacy. Find a suitable site where noone is overly affected.Caroline Brown (Dunton Bassett, Lutterworth, 2024-04-26)

Whilst I am in favour of renewable energy, I do not feel this is an appropriate location for this development and would like to see Barnsdale gardens continue to be an inspiration for gardeners for many years to come.Richard Filer (Dorchester, 2024-04-28)

This proposal is environmental vandalism. Agricultural land should be used for agriculture. This is completely the wrong place for solar panels.John Fitzpatrick (Hereford, 2024-04-29)

I am signing because I agree with Nick that whilst solar energy is a vital resource, any new farms should be built so as not to cause damage to already established environments that encourage wildlife and support the wellbeing of visitors to Barnsdale.Linda Davis-Sinclair (Northampton, 2024-04-30)

I was just reading my book about the life of Geoff Hamilton, which I return to often as he was a truly remarkable man who himself was able to change his own attitudes to life when presented with the facts.A practical man who tried to understand the working person and reach out to society to create a better place to be.
His work opened a whole new awareness for the organic gardener and living more in tune with nature. For sure, we need renewable energies, but once again profit over environment is taking place.
Geoff Hamilton's garden is not just as nostalgic nod to a pretty organic way of living, it is an inspiration to people to seek out the powerful positive effects of plants and gardens.
I would urge those who own the land to seek alternative ways of using the land and to they themselves dig deep within their conscience to think about the value our land holds beyond just a financial return.
So, we could ask, where should we place renewable energy if we are to move towards a greener energy solution? The answers are never easy, but, it is our responsibility to secure an economic future that has environmental elements as part of GDP

Sites such as Barnsdale need to be protected for future generations.. whilst I support renewable energy I am not in favour of using green field sites as it is the easy option … we have millions of warehouse roof space .. why has solar roofing not been explored as a viable option … Amazon for example who earn millions could surely lead the way in this type of initiative…. If anyone does actually read this I would welcome a response.Karen Little (Broadstairs, 2024-05-25)

I think there are better solutions to green energy than solar farms, which are an easy money making scheme for landowners. We need our green spaces for food security and for our mental wellbeing. Use less electric and put solar on roofs.Georgina Chapman (St Neots, 2024-05-27)
#2737
We should not contemplate losing green spaces such as Barnsdale where nature and creativity exist, they should be protected. There are ample other suitable sites for much needed alternative sources of energy. It is completely unnecessary to consider building here. Thank you, SallySally Bagguley (Nottingham, 2024-05-28)

There are better places for solar panels to go without disturbing the beauty & tranquility of beautiful gardens. Every east/west & south facing roof, new build be it a factory, warehouse or home, should have them fitted as standard. We need to be mindful of Food Security as much as energy security.Sharan Pinkney (Aslockton, 2024-05-28)

These established gardens are a precious asset to the wider gardening community and critically to local biodiversity. It is a vital resource for those seeking inspiration particularly with the recent surge in interest in gardening. Research repeatedly demonstrates the importance of gardening to mental health. We have a blue plaque scheme to mark and protect residences of historic figures which should extend to gardens. The role of Geoff Hamilton and Barnsdale Gardens in inspiring a generation who are inspiring future generations should not be underestimated.
The potential to extend and share knowledge with the diverse population of Leicester would be inclusive and support the ‘levelling up’ agenda in an underfunded region.
Please do not destroy what is already established whilst attempting to solve the energy crisis. There are plenty of brown field sites available including millions of large rooves.
The legislation to ensure that the numerous new builds include solar panels is within the gift of those in power. It is high time that local and central government worked together to use imaginative problem solving rather than taking the easy option despoiling those Green environments that already exist in the process. Building large scale solar farms is a lazy option that benefits large corporations buying ‘Green’ credits.
Please be more imaginative and task local populations to help solve the problem

After visiting Barnsdale Gardens a few years ago I was struck by the beauty, tranquility and homely feel of what is a large set of gardens. Solar is needed but parking panels right next to a treasure island for nature and wildlife as well as visitors seems selfish and unnecessary.Victoria Torring (Stroud, 2024-06-11)

I agree entirely with Nick’s comments. Barnsdale is a beautiful sanctuary for plants, wildlife, custodians and visitors. It should be cherished and nurtured. There are other places to build solar farms.Paula Staley (Leicester, 2024-06-12)

Although I am an advocate for renewable energy, I strongly believe that selected sites for solar panels or construction of any kind must be done carefully. They must surely be chosen for their appropriateness and because they will exist in harmony with the current surroundings. Barnsdale Gardens is a much treasured destination for horticulturalists and it will be impacted by this proposal causing considerable noise from the panels and extra traffic in their construction. Barnsdale could suffer losses to their business and harm to a site which is a haven for wildlife requiring peace and solitude. I urge you to seek a better alternative location that won't impact so greatly upon the pre-existing landscape.Helen Withers (Hitchin, 2024-06-13)

Barnsdale gardens is such a beautiful place to visit. It helps provide people with joy and happiness. I would hate to think that this was going to go due to a solar panel farm in its place. Yes solar panels are a good thing, but not in place of nature and also the legacy of a great man and the great work he did for gardens. This MUST stay!Lisa Chauhan (Peterborough, 2024-06-14)
