I am signing this petition as the solar farm could easily be put somewhere else. The gardens and their flowers bring great joy to a lot of people and lets face it, the way the world is now we all could be doing with more joy.

Places of real outstanding beauty are few and far between in our modern world and to destroy the serenity of Barnsdale Gardens would cause more harm than the good of a solar panel farm when more suitable locations are available.

Adrian Buckenham (WELLING, 2023-06-20)

Not on prime Farm land ,land needed to produce food

We must do everything we can to preserve natural habitats and places like Barnsdale, that contribute to informing people about creating habitats in their own gardens. This is not only essential for the natural environment but also for our health and wellbeing.

Susan Stairs (Nottingham, 2023-06-21)

The wind farm would be damaging to something that’s been there for 40 years.

Andy Moore (Hugglescote, 2023-06-21)

#1816

This is such a beautiful place and should not be under threat of closure.

Helen Cornelia (Leicester, 2023-06-21)

Barnsdale Gardens are full of inspiration, peace and beauty, including a wildlife garden and eco-friendly gardens attracting many visitors who seek the solace and peace of these gardens. The large size of the solar farm directly next to this iconic garden will mean that the peace visitors seek will be interrupted by the constant noise of the solar panels. The panels will also affect the wildlife - in particular the birds, which are part of the intricate web of wildlife in the garden.

Cheryl Murphy (Burton on Trent, 2023-06-21)

Gardening is important and we need to save these special examples for all to see.

Barnsdale Gardens is a unique national resource setup by one of the most popular and well regarded gardner presenters.
Solar power is needed, but not at the expense of an irreplaceable national asset.

It would be such a shame to deprive the public of such wonderful gardens to visit. I have been here several times and always leave feeling relaxed and inspired with ideas.

I am signing this petition because this is so wrong, Exton Energy need to find another field to build this on away from other peoples homes and businesses and take account of the noise and nuisance they will inevitably cause. Barnsdale Gardens has been there many years and is very popular and has many visitors and employs many people. It is the legacy or Geoff Hamilton and should be allowed to continue its business without the intrusion of solar farm being built. Show some consideration and respect and find a better position for your solar farm where it will not be a noisy nuisance. So many people visit Barksdale Gardens to enjoy the gardens, take part in courses provided there, buy plants and enjoy the tea rooms/restuarant on site, it is really something very special and a treat to visit and I would be heartbroken if Barnsdale Gardens was forced out by a solar farm and so would a lot more people. Let's face it Geoff Hamilton was busy being green in his gardening methods and TV programmes long before you came along with your solar farm, he'd be turning in his grave. Show some understanding and respect and don't be greedy and insensitive, there's a time and place for everything but next door to Barnsdale Gardens is not it.

Rebecca Harrison (Nottingham, 2023-06-22)

#1837

Barnstable is a piece of UK gardening history and should be protected as such

Patricia Vella (Reading, 2023-06-22)

#1838

There are not enough places which have been established for decades where people can enjoy nature, beautiful gardens, peace and tranquillity. An oasis in this modern world. To build so close to Barnsdale would ruin the atmosphere it creates.

Ann Heafford (Leicester, 2023-06-22)

#1841

I’m signing this petition as this solar farm would impact greatly on Barnsdale Gardens and very likely cause the closure of this much loved attraction.
While I fully understand the need for alternative energy provision I’m convinced there are more appropriate sites which could be considered.

Liz Sharp (Corby, 2023-06-23)

#1843

I believe that the gardens are a part of our heritage.

Ian Welch (BURY ST. EDMUNDS, 2023-06-23)

#1849

Barnsdale is synonymous with my life as a gardener. It is a haven for nature and calm and exemplifies good organic gardening techniques for all to learn from. It would be a travesty for this location to be closed due to the impact of the proposed solar farm

Clare Hutchinson (Chesterfield, 2023-06-25)

#1853

Barnstable gardens are a real delight and need preserving

Paul Osmond (Melton Mowbray, 2023-06-26)

#1855

I feel although the need for clean energy is great that there simply isn't the justification for this proposed sites location.

Joseph Stanton (CRAWLEY, 2023-06-26)

#1857

These gardens where created by Geoff Hamilton, I'm of an age where I can fondly remember my father watching gardeners world weekly, and I believe barnsdale is a lasting memory of the work geoff Hamilton done to ensure future generations of would be gardeners caught the bug.

This can’t be true!!
I love Barnsdale gardens. Still have sweet memories watching Gardners World with Geoff Hamilton. He made me love Gardening, still have his books, and also visited the nursery

#1863

I agree that there are better local fields to place a solar farm than close to Barnstable gardens

Karen Bywater (Oakham, 2023-06-27)

#1868

There needs to be more garden centres around and his father started this one many years ago

Ann Smith (Malton, 2023-06-28)

#1871

I am signing this because more thought needs to be put in to honour local businesses and wildlife when planning where to place solar farms.
Just because renewable energy is the current focus, it does not mean we should run roughshod over the income of others and environmental issues.
If there is a better local site, then use it. Or is it easier, both financially and locally, to impact on Barnsdale Gardens? If so, please think again and try to follow a win-win policy.

Lizzie Brown (Swindon, 2023-06-29)

#1873

This is one of the best and inspirational gardens in the UK and must be saved from any future solar farm development

John Wells (Lowestoft, 2023-06-29)

#1874

I recently visited the gardens for the first time this month and having walked from and then back to Oakham it appeared to me that there were other areas that could be considered for the solar farm without causing upset to the locals, farmers and visitors.Although I strongly support renewable energy schemes I am sure if Geoff was still here he would have eloquently argued against this proposal.

Susan Horwood (Bristol, 2023-06-29)

#1875

An established garden like this with such a variety of plants would be a huge loss to horticulturists throughout the world as well as lovers of Gardeners World. As a green oasis it is also important to an enormous variety of insects and other animals.

Lynne Rock (Luton, 2023-06-29)

#1878

Barnsdale Gardens must be saved and not be forced to close because of the proposed blot on the landscape/solar farm.

Brian Harvey (Hitchin, 2023-06-30)

#1881

The future of these beautiful garden’s must be protected. Greenfield sites should not be used for solar farms. They are a blight on the countryside and wildlife

Patricia Bayston (Mansfield, 2023-06-30)

#1882

Such a beautiful place should not be at risk.

Elaine Osmond (Leicestershire, 2023-07-01)

#1883

This garden is part of English garden history. It has provided-dare I say millions of gardeners - with new ideas and probably thousands of non-gardeners with an inspiration to find their green thumb. It’s a testament to Geoff Hamilton and his family who have cared for it beautifully-it just needs to stay and become/ remain English Heritage.

If the gardens have to close because of the construction of a wind farm, it will be a great loss of a valuable resource which exists as a result of years of effort. In general I am in favour of an increase in these structures.

Barnsdale is a uniquely attractive series of gardens with an interesting history which should be regarded as part of our national heritage, and it should not be threatened with closure by unsympathetic local development.

Barnsdale is somewhere I have always wanted to visit and I haven't been yet. Also I think it's an important garden to preserve. Lovely places should be cherished.

Andrea Longos (Preston, 2023-07-03)

#1909

Barnsdale is a haven of peace and calm, where visiters can escape from troubles and worries
The solar farm would take that away and this garden has been here for many many year and long may it remain .

#1910

I visit this location often and enjoy the experience and this is a nice local business being threatened by lack of local foresight

Angela Moss (Derby, 2023-07-05)

Barbsdale in the time of Geoff Hamilton was inspiring as a young amateur garden
His son has done a wonderful job in keeping it going and the idea of fca wasteful solar farm causing its demise is appalling

I do not want this solar farm development to ruin the beautiful peacefulness of Barnsdale gardens. The gardens bring so much pleasure to visitors who love flowers, gardening and help bring calmness and peace to those who suffer from mental health issues.
This development will ruin the gardens and should they close it will be a great loss to many people .

Karen Bedding (Northampton, 2023-07-07)

Christine Allin (Barningham, 2023-07-08)

#1934

I'm signing this petition because a beautiful oasis like Barnsdale Gardens can not be sacrificed for the need for renewable energy when there are other sites nearby that could be used for that purpose, without impacting on a treasured & valuable established site

Nick Reith (Eastleigh, 2023-07-09)

#1935

These farms are supposed to be green, better for the environment. Lots of parts are not recyclable after their relatively short lifespan. We have similar planned in our village and hours of research revealed this is not a good long term way to produce green energy. Also the effects of the noise produced on wildlife is counterproductive.
This historic garden needs protection from this awful scheme. Will never forget Geoff Hamilton and his love of gardening, nature and protection of the environment, way before most people had even given such things a single thought.

Susan Layton (Gloucester, 2023-07-09)

#1942

Surely there is somewhere more suitable to build this solar farm.

Helen Laughton (Orpington, 2023-07-09)

Barnsdale gardens are a treasure located in Rutland where local people can both enjoy the peace of the garden, admire the amazing collection of plants and trees and also take advantage of the garden centre where the plants benefit from largely having been grown on the premises. Not only this, the gardens are a national resource that brings visitors to our small county and therefore a support to local businesses. Between July 2016 and 20I21 I was the owner of holiday accommodation locally and aware that for many of my guests these indescribably beautiful gardens were one of the prime motivations for their visit.

Originally planted by Geoff Hamilton, one of first tv gardeners, Barnsdale gardens are now run by his son, Nick who, in addition to being endlessly helpful to customers, has also developed this wonderful resource to provide a wide range of seminars covering all things garden related. The tea room serve’s excellent food which is cooked fresh on the premises from breakfast to afternoon tea throughout the day so enabling visitors to enjoy the gardens and also take a break in a delightful setting, either inside or out.

For Rutland Council to even consider any planning request that would pose a threat to this iconic garden would be a betrayal of the people of Rutland

I am signing this petition because I am concerned about the following:
*impact on run-off water levels to surrounding grounds
*impact of noise of panels, particularly affecting wildlife
*Impact of noise of panels reducing the numbers of visitors to Barnsdale Gardens thus affecting the business
*impact on wildlife, particularly migrating birds in/out Rutland Water, mistaking panels for a piece of water, thus causing injury/death to a variety of species
*the noise from the panels’ motors will impact detrimentally on my teaching a variety of art classes at the Gardens; attracting potential students will become more difficult as they attend due to the peaceful, inspirational location

It takes many decades and a lot of hard work to create a beautiful garden. A huge part of a garden is its atmosphere and setting within a landscape.
I know how I would feel if this was happening next to my 2 acre garden, and I empathise strongly with the Barnsdale team.
Not only are they trying to preserve a wonderful place, they are trying to run a successful business. Their livelihood is at stake.
A different location must be considered.

I completely understand the need for solar panels but the correct positioning of solar farms of such a great size has to be carefully considered and should not be placed next to residential properties and a business such as Barnstaple Gardens where it will have a catastrophic impact on lives and businesses. I think that what Geoffrey Hamilton did for gardening was very important, helping to bring it to people's attention in an accessible way. Gardening is vital for good mental health in an age of increasing anxiety and tension. So many people have Geoff's books and these Gardens gardens bring the designs to life, not just one but so many. They are part of the gardening history of this country, part of our culture. There are other potential sites for solar panels but only one Barnsdale.
