Reopen Duck Creek Road in Scenic Rim

I'm local and we have waited too long for this road to reopen. My family used to be able to drive 30 min to work on Green Mountains when the road was open. Now if they want to work there it will take the 2 1/2 hours. Our tourism campers cannot easily access the grades tracks in Lamington National Park. Safety in the event of an emergency also needs addressing. How do you evacuate 400 to 1500 people down one road that may have a landslip on it in an emergency without a second exit road.Sally Undery (Kerry, 2024-02-13)

I support the reopening of this important scenic, nature and safety road. Repairs should have been underway years ago.ROSS ELLIOTT (AUCHENFLOWER, 2024-02-14)

As someone who consistently gets carsick using the normal road up to O'Reilly's, I would love to have the option to not!Emma Walsh (Canberra, 2024-02-15)

I recognise the economic, social and safety benefits of having this road open and accessible again. But in addition, I recognise it has always been more than a road. Duck Creek Road was a grassroots initiative that has a rich history and brought the community together. I hope we have the opportunity for this to happen again.Woo O’Reilly (Canberra, 2024-02-15)

Duck Creek Road was a favourite day trip for our family and friends over many years. It is also safer for residents and visitors to have an alternate route to travel in case of fire or road closures due to accidents.

The closure of the public road to Green Mountains (O'Reilly's) from Kerry since Cyclone Debbie in 2017 has had a significant impact on the local community and the broader region. Reopening this road is essential for several reasons, with economic revitalization being a primary driver.Firstly, reopening the road would create job opportunities for the local population. The tourism industry is a major employer in many regions, and access to Green Mountains is vital for the success of local businesses, including accommodations, restaurants, and tour operators. By restoring the connection, more jobs can be generated, helping to reduce unemployment and boost the overall economic well-being of the community.
Secondly, tourism is a crucial factor in the region's economy, and reopening the road would attract visitors, injecting much-needed money into the area. Green Mountains is known for its breathtaking scenery, diverse wildlife, and unique ecotourism experiences. Tourists contribute not only through accommodation and dining but also by participating in activities such as guided tours, birdwatching, and nature walks. The road closure has limited access, hindering the potential for tourism growth and revenue generation.
Furthermore, reopening the road is a step towards environmental conservation. Green Mountains is part of Lamington National Park, and access to this natural wonder is vital for raising awareness about the need to preserve and protect our natural heritage. By allowing more people to experience the beauty of the area, there is a greater chance of fostering a sense of responsibility and appreciation for the environment, leading to potential conservation efforts and support.
In addition to economic and environmental benefits, reopening the road would enhance the region's overall infrastructure. Improved accessibility can lead to increased investment in the area, as businesses and investors are more likely to be attracted to locations with convenient transportation links. This, in turn, can contribute to the development of better amenities and services for both locals and visitors.
In conclusion, reopening the public road to Green Mountains from Kerry is essential for stimulating economic growth, creating job opportunities, promoting tourism, and supporting environmental conservation. The benefits extend beyond the local community, influencing the broader region and contributing to the overall well-being of both residents and visitors alike. It is a crucial step towards unlocking the full potential of this scenic and ecologically significant destination.

Scenic rim is renowned as a beautiful place to visit. O'Reilly's lamington national park will become another destination while visiting the beautiful Kerry valley. It is also imperative O'Reilly's has an optional route in the event of bushfires.Annette Moloney (Kerry, 2024-02-15)
