I support the government’s measures but something has to be done to help freelancers. We have committed our time and played our part in being responsible. That should be honoured.Sarah Smith (Singapore, 2020-03-19)

All shows have been cancelled since COVID happened in Jan. Most enrichment classes were cancelled too. As such, income has dropped by 60-70%. Now that CCAs and remaining sch activities have been cancelled, I’m practically left with zero income.Mohamed Razfrainn Rozaly (Singapore, 2020-03-19)

It is absolutely not fair to us instructors and vendor companies that we are not backed up by the union because we are considered a private entity. We are also hit with this pandemic and when we are paid by the hour that we set aside for the good of the students' learning, it makes absolutely no sense that we are not supported financially in this period solely because of our title as "freelancers".Rosanne Chan (Singapore, 2020-03-19)

I am signing as a working mother making a living in one of the world’s most expensive cost of living country. I take pride in my work and strongly feel that we as a body of freelancers in a top notch city should not be taken granted for. I stand with the rest of the Artistes who has been struggling with the situation when performance shows are cancelled. Do understand that we are grateful for being well taken care of as citizens of Singapore and well informed of the global issue. We are only asking for some form of standards in agreements with regards to school projects which affects our income.Yong Mei Lien (Singapore, 2020-03-19)

I'm signing because my income and livelihood as a dance instructor will be affected with the mandatory pause/cancellation of dance-related activities in school.Upon prioritization of schools' activities in our schedule, most of us do not take up other jobs , and having no compensation for 2weeks' worth of job cancellations puts us at a serious disadvantage in tiding through our monetary commitments, especially in this COVID-19 period.

Alternatives to cutting CCA so suddenly were not considered. It is a source of income for quite a number of us you know? It’s not like thing can’t be shifted online.Taken from my social media post:
For those of us musicians depending on CCAs, wouldn’t it be possible to convert those hours into online theory/ musicianship lessons instead?
Bring up the theory standards of every. single. member. in the ensemble. To at least a Grade 5 level. The students will also get a certification out of it if they then choose to enroll in the next available exam with any of the exam boards.
There’s so much we can do in online lessons! So many websites, so many online tools, and students can always PM questions to us. It becomes more personalised.
If the situation escalates we can explore music history and styles, rhythm strengthening, score reading, and aural training. Aural training can include melodic dictation and harmony exploration. Heck! We might even explore stuff outside of syllabuses!
*Use this time to work on the other aspects of music that doesn’t require teamwork or in-person attention.*
Build up each individual’s knowledge so when ensemble practice resumes, students will be much more knowledgeable!
Schools should consider this as a CCA alternative, because not every parent can afford private music lessons, and CCA teachers need to keep ourselves afloat too. Online *group* lessons are entirely possible, and it can be recorded for quality/ checking/ safety purposes.
Appealing to educator friends to try and make this work within your school if possible, because we never know which way the situation could go and CCAs could be closed for a few more months. Let’s be flexible during this time!
For parents who believe in what the arts can bring, and if you want your child to get a leg up in the above aspects of music, feel free to contact me, and either I can teach or link you up with fellow musicians. Let’s do our part in keeping each other afloat during such times.
Here’s one random online music tool I’m sharing for anyone to use:

With my source of income coming from teaching CCAs, suspension of classes due to covid-19 will drastically decrease my income. Not being supported by the government in this aspect is extremely discouraging.Lynn Tan (Singapore, 2020-03-19)

Part of my income comes from teaching CCAs, suspension of CCA and enrichment classes due to covid-19 will affect my income, and we do not know how long this will last. There is a need for the government, as well as wider society to understand that as independent artists, freelancers and educators, we play a large part in filling the gap of education for children in a way that regular academia cannot cover. We do not simply come in and teach the art form which we practise, but also attempt to instill in the children the concept of resilience, hard work, team work and more so, empathy for each other. In this time of a pandemic, simply cancelling our CCA sessions simply sets a precedence that all the hard work and training that they've put in and have been working for is for moot. That an authority figure can simply come in and take away all that is important and dear to them overnight. And worse so, not establish contingency plans or alternative methods to support us as instructors, to continue our teaching and learning journey with our students. If anything, more focus should be put into remuneration for us, where much further creativity and hard work has to be put in to continue engaging with our students. If we aim to educate with compassion as freelance instructors, surely the same compassion and support needs to be given back to us in order to fuel our processes. On a more personal level, apart from simply losing my salary in a day's notice, I can't help but be disappointed by the fact that no support on my side, nor even the institutions can be given to the children, who are effectively the ones who bear the direct affect of this situation. Who is going to mediate their disappointment and help show them support in this time? I'm not even allowed to gather and give them assurance that there are plans put in place for them, and that their effort has not gone to waste. There needs to be a better support system established to also answer to the expectations of the children.

It is to safeguard our career, our income, our rights to have subsidies by government to aid us freelancers in this critical situation.Employees from overseas are being helped by Government and their respective companies on their lodging and etc, and people on SHN are eligible for the allowance of $100/day. However, we are being stopped abruptly with immediate notices and we can’t even plan or foresee anything, and now we have zero income for these two weeks. If the situation isn’t getting any better, the suspension can be extended. If cca have to be cancelled/suspended, I don’t see why school curriculums are not affected when the students spent much more time in their classrooms and lessons than they spend in their cca which is just 2-3 hours.

While it is understandable that these measures have to be taken, it is at the expense of us freelancers who dedicate their time and craft for these students that have been entrusted to us.The least that can be done, even if there was no solution, is at least some form of support or response to our situation in light of what is going on.

Freelancers have been sustaining themselves without the stability of corporatized employees. It is time we walk the talk and not sweep their trials and tribulations-which during normal times are already dire enough- under the carpet. They need our support after they have supported our school systems and making it more dynamic over the years.Fin Philips (Singapore, 2020-03-24)

At the beginning of the virus (during CNY), i've been spreading an idea that we should just lock the city up for 2 weeks, support everyone $1000 for that 2 weeks, sort out who is infected, and control from there. While the intention might be to prepare the citizens and avoid causing panic... the slowly increased measures is causing more pain to the economy.
What if all of us stop everything we're doing for 2 weeks and sort things out?
Because many before me had stopped work for months. And now it's my turn until possibly July. And more people will be affected next. And what about those who got affected before me?
If we all can be united and be responsible for each other at the same time, we can contain it.
This is causing too much long term pain for the people and country.
Mu Ming Yang (Tampines, 2020-03-26)
