Petition against Mining on Rooifontein Farm

Rooifontein Farm

It was with renewed horror that we again hear that a company is trying to resume diamond mining on Rooifontein farm on the outskirts of Kimberley.

They obviously have no idea on the historical importance of Rooifontein to not just Kimberley but also to South Africa (and the world), especially the valuable historical sites that are worth more than diamonds or any other minerals put together.

These sites include:

Khoi/San engravings on two kopjes that are not yet recorded

The ruins of the original Olifantsfontein Hotel

The ruins of the original Police Station

The site of a Boer laager from the Siege of Kimberley

Boer Gun pits, sangars and trenches from the Siege of Kimberley

Wagon trails from the 19th century

Tram line for the Olifantsfontein mine

The Olifantsfontein open mine pit

Exploration Shafts and an untouched Diggers camp from the 1880s

19th century and early 20th century refuse/ash tips

Bomb craters from World War 2

Water furrows made during the depression years in the 1930s

And much more…

We object most strenuously to any renewed diamond workings on Rooifontein, and will continue to do so no matter what, as it will destroy our heritage that we should be maintaining for future generations. The company waxes lyrical about rehabilitation but does not state how they shall save and secure the historical sites.

Which of course, they cannot!

Would you allow mining activities to take place on the farm Rooifontein??

The farm is managed by a Club and we all agree wholeheartedly that mining on  will devastate the great nature reserve we have
