Melusina first opened its doors as a cultural venue 40 years ago and has been a nightclub for the past 25 years.


Long established, the original concert venue and forerunner in Luxembourg’s nightlife, has been made uncompetitive due to fact that local authorities are not granting it a 6AM operating licence which is being granted liberally to other venues around the city - in fact Melusina is the only nightclub in the city not to have a 6AM licence.


Over the past decade, Melusina complied with several demands of the local authority, such as soundproofing the site (at a huge cost) in order to get the 6AM licence. However, the application was still being refused!


The local authority says that - unlike the many other clubs in Luxembourg who are given 6AM licences - Melusina is situated in an 'exclusively residential zone'. Although this zone only came into existence in the Nineties, when Melusina had been at its location for 30 years, the most pressing debate is this:

In 2008, the local authority actively supported for this ‘exclusively residential area’ to become a nightlife hotspot by granting permission to the Clausen entertainment area within the very same zone, located just 50 meters away from Melusina. What exactly does the local authority understand by an 'exclusively residential zone'?


Melusina is a small privately owned business and has successfully operated without any support from the government and hence people’s taxes. It is a shame that Melusina has to consider restructuring it’s business simply because the local authority fails to see the bigger picture. Considering the location of other clubs and bars in Luxembourg city, it seem unfair and ridiculous that the law is solely implemented on us. But this petition is NOT against other venues, but against a local authority, which appears to operate on double standards!


While the local authority is constantly freeing up taxpayers money to support various cultural events around the city, it seems unreal that a private cultural venue, which successfully operated for years, becomes uncompetitive because the local authority is pushing it against the wall.


Especially since the 3AM closing law, which governs Clausen, creates a ‘noise problem’ at which the local authority is chucking more tax money: The recent ‘No Noise’ campaign by the City highlights issues, which in fact are created by the local authority itself. If people were not forced out of every venue in Clausen at the same time (3AM) then the noise problem would not be so apparent, maybe even non-existent. This kind of problem has been dealt with by other major European Cities by deregulating closing laws. Why does Luxembourg City think it can solve this in such old fashioned way?


So we're now appealing to YOU, the people of Luxembourg, to keep Melusina alive the way you know it - as a nightclub. In 2011 there will be communal elections in Luxembourg and we would like to send a message to our local authority that this is not the way private business should/can be done in Luxembourg.
